Ben Afflecks Role As Batman Is Still Unclear

Among the many movies in development for Warner Bros DC Universe is Matt Reeves solo Batman flick, which has finally started coming together. For instance, the script is accounted for by the writer/director, with casting reportedly moving forward soon. The question on everyones minds is who will answer the Bat Signal and play the Caped Crusader in the film?

In a recent interview, Matt Reeves updated fans on the status of the project, explaining the casting process will soon begin, after he puts the finishing touches on the script. But he didnt say a word regarding if Ben Affleck will be reprising his Justice League role, or if theyd be going in a different direction.

When The Batman was first being developed at Warner Bros, Ben Affleck had quite a stake in the project as he was attached to write, direct and star in the film. After he took a reduced role int eh blockbuster and Matt Reeves took over as writer/director, the question of whether Affleck would be continuing to play Batman has been floating in the air.

Ben Afflecks recent time in rehab to focus his efforts on recovering from his alcohol addiction could certainly be playing a part in the actor and studios silence about the future of his Batman role. On the other hand, Afflecks involvement with the DCEU have not been blockbuster and critical successes. Both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League didnt leave a strong impression on audiences, despite the actor's strong performance.

Since their releases, the studio seems to moving away from building upon those particular movies. Apart from Wonder Woman and Aquaman, the upcoming DCEU slate includes a completely new set of heroes.

Thats not to say this had much to do with Ben Afflecks performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman in these films. In fact, many fans were pleasantly surprised about how perfect the actor was as the iconic character, and are hoping to see him take on the hero in a film of his own. The actor may no longer share the same interest, especially since he exited developing his Batman project.

In Matt Reeves update to The Hollywood Reporter, he said he is hoping for a 2021 release date for his film, which he describes as a noir Batman tale that will show the character in detective mode more than ever seen in other film iterations. The Batman will have a Rogue Gallery of villains, reportedly including The Penguin.

Considering the current direction of the DCEU, Ben Affleck doesnt have to reprise his role of Batman for it all to work. The shuffling of actors under the mask of the Bat was common throughout the 90s.

As The Batman moves forward this year, it will certainly soon become clear about whether Ben Affleck has a place as the Dark Knight. Until then, there are some exciting DCEU releases coming up in 2019, including Shazam! on April 5 and Joker on October 4.

Jordan Peele Says Us Has Enough Fun For Non-Horror Fans

The horror genre has been in a renaissance the past few years, as filmmakers bring new and exciting concepts to the silver screen, and scare the crap out of moviegoers in the process. Rather than stale franchises and torture porn, the genre is thriving thanks to the unique perspective of its contributors. And there's no one quite on top of the game like Jordan Peele.

Jordan Peele made his directorial debut with 2017's Get Out, which he also wrote and produced. The film was a massive critical and financial success, and Peele even earned an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. All eyes were on what would be his follow-up, and this weekend Us finally arrives in theaters. Us has been teased to be much scarier than Get Out, but Peele thinks that the movie is still accessible for moviegoers who aren't necessarily horror buffs. As he tells it,

I think this is a scarier movie than Get Out, but I'm being told that people who don't like horror movies still like this movie. I think the fun outweighs the scary.

While Us has been promised to be a terrifying time in the theater, Jordan Peele seems to think that non-horror fans will still enjoy the project. Namely, because there's still moments of fun in the movie that will outweigh the various jump scares and atmospheric tension.

Jordan Peele's comments to E! Online may give some cinephiles a sense of relief. The hype around Us has been significant, and the movie is already a critical darling. The reviews tease just how terrifying the horror movie is, which may scare off moviegoers who don't typically shell out cash to watch a movie while hiding behind their hands.

Smart money says that Jordan Peele includes moments of levity and fun throughout the course of Us (at least before the chaos begins). Get Out certainly let the director use his comedy roots during the film's first two acts, as things around Daniel Kaluuya's Chris began getting gradually more bizarre. It only seems logical that Us would do the same, especially as Peele teases the fun aspect of his sophomore film.

It should also be interesting to see what message Jordan Peele ultimately shares with Us, as his projects usually have deep connections to the real world. Get Out was a social commentary about race in a post-Obama world, while Us' message is still a bit more mysterious ahead of the film's release.

Jordan Peele took the concept of a doppelganger family from his childhood fears, and the movie has been teased to be a parable about self-destruction. But I've got a feeling the director has some more tricks up his sleeve for the highly anticipated horror flick.

Deadpool 2 Just Beat IT For A Box Office Record

The Merc with a Mouth and Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Each icons in their own way, these two characters are both excellent at murder and absolutely kill it at the box office despite their R ratings. Last year, Stephen King's IT floated to great heights at the box office, breaking records and landing on the horror and R-rated all-time lists with its $700.3 million worldwide haul. But Pennywise couldn't hold onto all of its spots for long, as now Deadpool 2 has surpassed IT to become the third-highest grossing R-rated film of all time.

Deadpool 2, which is still in the top 5 at the domestic box office over a month since its release, crossed $700 million over the weekend, according to Deadline, bringing its worldwide total to a whopping $705 million. That is good enough to shoot out Pennywise's Deadlights and pass IT to become the #3 R-rated movie of all time. Still ahead of Deadpool 2 on the worldwide R-rated charts are The Matrix Reloaded at #2 with $742.1 million and the first Deadpool at #1 with $783.1 million. It seems unlikely that Deadpool 2 will have quite enough juice left at the box office to overtake either of those movies, but Wade Wilson owning two out of the top three spots on the all-time list is pretty good and basically makes Deadpool the most successful R-rated franchise ever.

Deadpool 2 has performed well both domestically and abroad with its current box office split being $304.1 million domestic and $400.9 million from foreign receipts. The Ryan Reynolds-starring sequel also nabbed Fox International's biggest opening of all time with $176.3 million, surpassing the studio's PG-13 mutant film, X-Men: Days of Future Past. In addition to ripping on Wolverine in the movie itself, Deadpool 2 also defeated Logan at the box office to become the highest-grossing international debut for an R-rated film. All of this is made more impressive by virtue of the fact that Deadpool 2 and its predecessor did not open in the increasingly large and important Chinese market due to censorship laws. So even without China, Deadpool 2 still managed to break records. It should also be noted that IT wasn't released in China either.

Although he has been knocked down a peg for now, Pennywise will have another chance to go for Deadpool's box office crown when IT: Chapter 2 hits theaters. The sequel will complete the big screen adaptation of Stephen King's tome and will again be directed by Andres Muschietti. Production has already begun with an all-star cast, as IT: Chapter 2 is set for release on September 6, 2019.
