What To Expect From Jude Law's Captain Marvel Character

Contrary to the initial belief that Captain Marvel would depict Carol Danvers' origin story, it was revealed yesterday that Brie Larson's iteration of the the longtime Marvel superhero will not only already have her powers when the movie begins, but she'll be serving in the elite military Kree organization known as Starforce. Leading the Starforce is Jude Law's character, who has taken a liking to Carol. While Law didn't name who he's playing in Captain Marvel, he did disclose that this individual is incredibly dedicated to the Kree empire. As the actor put it:

He is driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people. So he's almost a devout warrior --- unquestioning, conservative, but inspirational.

When Jude Law was first rumored to be joining Captain Marvel late last year, it was implied that he would be playing Walter Lawson, a.k.a. Mar-Vell, the Kree protagonist who was indirectly responsible for Carol Danvers gaining her powers in the comics. Apparently Marvel Studios isn't willing to officially divulge the character's identity just yet, but one thing is certain: he's loyal to his fellow Kree, who live on Hala. While it's possible that this could still be Mar-Vell, albeit with some creative liberties taken, the above description also brings to mind Yon-Rogg, a Kree villain who Ben Mendelsohn was previously rumored to be playing. That has since been debunked, but perhaps Law is portraying the character instead, which then begs the question of if Mar-Vell is appearing at all in Captain Marvel.

As far as Carol Danvers is concerned, Jude Law's Captain Marvel character views her as a "mentee and pet project," prioritizing her over other Starforce members, like Ronan the Accuser, Korath the Pursuer and Minn-Erva. Law continued in his interview with EW:

These extraordinary powers she has, he sees them as something of a blessing and something that she has to learn how to control. That's a motif throughout the piece, the element of learning to control one's emotions and to use your powers wisely.

Brie Larson added that there's "a lot of back and forth" between Carol Danvers and Jude Law's character in Captain Marvel, which creates some tension within the rest of Starforce. While Law's character sounds invested in Carol's development, maybe things could take a turn where he shifts from being her mentor to her adversary. The Skrulls are Captain Marvel's main antagonists, but given how important his people are to him, if a situation comes up where Carol chooses to protect humanity over continuing to serve the Kree, I could see Law's character retaliating against her.

Kevin Smith Is Standing Up For Thanos Big Snap

After a decade of filmmaking, the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe is coming to a head with the final few installments in Phase Three. Almost every major character in the MCU joined forces to battle Josh Brolin's Thanos, who was hell bent on destroying half the galaxy in order to "save" its overpopulated occupants. The Russo Brothers threw moviegoing audiences for a loop by allowing the Mad Titan to win, accumulating the Infinity Stones to facilitate his mass murder. Fans were left to watch in horror as their favorite characters turned to dust, and left with nothing but disdain for Thanos in the wake. But comic book aficionado and director Kevin Smith seems to think that the villain wasn't that bad. After all, he could have killed everyone.

From a certain perspective he's a hero. He could have literally wiped out everybody with one snap. I call that mercy.

If there's one word that hasn't been associated with Thanos, it's mercy. That is, unless you're one of his twisted followers from The Black Order. Let's break down exactly what Kevin Smith is proposing here.

Kevin Smith's comments come from his most recent Fatman on Batman podcast. A pod dedicated to all things nerdy and comic book related, Smith has weighed in on every silver screen superhero flick you could imagine. This obviously includes Avengers: Infinity War, a blockbuster whose affects are still being felt by the fandom.

Having all of the Infinity Stones certainly gave Thanos the ability to kill every single denizen of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Josh Brolin's character always maintained he was doing it for the greater good, as it was the only way to save the Galaxy from its insurmountable overpopulation. And he succeeds, with the film's final moments revealing a newly revitalized Titan for the Mad Titan to call home. Thanos completed his task, but at what cost?

It should be interesting to see how Thanos' finger snap is addressed in Avengers 4, which is still nearly a year away. Infinity War ended with Captain America wondering what happened, and that's exactly what fans have been feeling. And while there are two blockbusters in between Infinity War and Avengers 4, all eyes are on how the MCU changed in the wake of the snap. How much time has passed? Can the fallen heroes be brought back? We're just going to have to wait and see, while allowing Captain Marvel to satiate our appetites.

Natalie Portman knows The Force can be strong with bad movies. She debuted to raves in The Professional -- which came out in 1994 when she was just 13. After that strong start, she picked up an Oscar for Black Swan, plus two more nominations (so far). But she's also had some stinkers, though the actress noted that there's a freedom that comes with surviving flops, saying:

It takes the fear out of the risk a little more. I've been in stuff that didn't work and it didn't kill me. The worst thing that could've happened was that it wouldn't work. That came from failing a lot, having a lot of experiences making movies that I thought would be great but didn't turn out that way, and seeing that I could survive that. At the end of the day, it's a movie. You will move on and make another one.

That's a good attitude. Movie failures mean big bucks down the tube, so it's not like it's nothing, but at least you can analyze and learn from mistakes. Without any duds, maybe Natalie Portman would be too frozen to take chances, out of fear that this time might be the one that doesn't work out. Portman also preceded her statement by stating that "people can come up with their own ideas" about what her "duds" are.

Natalie Portman made her comments before the 2018 IndieWire Honors ceremony, which celebrated filmmakers and actors for achievements in creative independence. She has definitely showcased that creative independence over the past 20-plus years in the industry. Instead of going for a singular "brand," she's stretched her range from indies to blockbusters, like Woody Allen's musical Everyone Says I Love You and her edgy role in Closer, to the three Star Wars prequels and first two Thor movies. She even made time for two iconic Saturday Night Live raps. Jennifer Lawrence wishes!

But since she brought it up, yeah, viewers could probably point to a few of her "bad" movies. Considering Portman's own Thor: The Dark World co-star Chris Hemsworth called that movie "meh," it might be fair to add it to the naughty list, although no Marvel Cinematic Universe movie really qualifies as a failure.

Right before joining the MCU, Portman made the stoner comedy Your Highness, which failed with critics and at the box office, picking up only $28 million from a $50 million budget. (Like many comedies, it found a cult audience.) Portman's Western Jane Got A Gun also got shot down by critics and ticket-buyers. Annihilation recently flopped at the box office, too, and faced a whitewashing controversy, although critics enjoyed it.

Natalie Portman has also evolved her career from just acting to producing, writing, and directing -- including all three for the Israeli drama A Tale of Love and Darkness in 2015. She's back to acting as the leading face of the new musical Vox Lux, co-starring Jude Law, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, and Jennifer Ehle.

Vox Lux -- which could fall onto Portman's naughty or nice list, up to viewers -- will sing its way into theaters on December 7.
