Why One First Purge Actor Didn't Watch The Movies Before Filming

Generally, when coming in to a movie franchise, you would think that an actor would want to know everything they could about the universe they are entering. Knowing what came before and learning about the universe can help you understand your character better and the world they inhabit, which can inform your performance. Yet one of the actors in The First Purge didn't watch any of the previous three films filming. Rotimi Paul, who plays Skeletor in the film, explained his reasoning behind not watching the other movies first, saying:

I was very familiar with the other films and knew the premise of the franchise but hadn't seen them, so with knowing that our script was a prequel, I made the choice to wait until we wrapped shooting to go watch all of them. I didn't want to be influenced by any of the characters that already existed in that world and it also made sense based on the timeline because everything that we shot comes before the other films, so they wouldn't have much relevance to the time period in our film. Of the first three films, Anarchy was my favorite. Of the entire franchise, ours is undoubtedly my favorite. The First Purge added some powerful new elements to the series and is told through some incredibly strong characters.

This is interesting reasoning and it actually makes a great deal of logical sense given the premise of the film. The First Purge is a prequel film and the first instance in the film's internal universe where the annual murder-fest takes place. There isn't a precedent for this event, and thus all of the characters in the film are experiencing the Purge for the first time. There is a newness to it, and with no game tape of previous years to watch, strategies to study up on or really any knowledge at all as to how crazy this can get and how to get through it, all of these characters are breaking new ground with fear, excitement and curiosity. By not watching the previous films before filming, as Rotimi Paul told Pop-Culturist, he took a method approach to experience the Purge for the first time just like his character.

It would be difficult to be completely ignorant of The Purge given how much the premise has become a part of the pop culture lexicon. Still, even though Rotimi Paul knew the premise and the broad strokes of the franchise, by not watching any of the previous films, he didn't know how the characters in the other entries acted in these situations. So without any preconceived notions, he allowed his performance to be governed by the director and the script. Rotimi Paul's Skeletor plays a big role in The First Purge too, so it's kind of cool that he took this approach. Rotimi Paul also discussed which of the films are his favorite. He cited the one he's in as the best (smart) and chose The Purge: Anarchy as his favorite of the first three, which I believe is many fans' favorite as well.

The First Purge debuted to mixed reviews and a lower box office than its predecessors, earning $17.1 million over the weekend and $31 million over its first five days in release. The American tradition of the Purge isn't going away either. The Purge TV series is coming to USA in September and just premiered its first trailer.

MoviePass Is Cutting Its Prices Again

From the very second MoviePass cut down its monthly subscription rate to $9.95, the company has been a huge topic of conversation among the movie-going community. Theaters argue that MoviePass is taking away from the theater-going experience, while others argue that MoviePass can't sustain itself based on its business model. Regardless, MoviePass has not slowed down, and if critics were concerned before, they must be flabberghasted right now. MoviePass has once again lowered its subscription rate in a limited time offer of $7.95 a month, plus a free subscription to the Fandor streaming service.

MoviePass has announced a new limited time offer of $7.95 a month to see one movie a week for its consumers. MoviePass CEO Mitch Lowe told The Hollywood Reporter that they haven't decided when the offer will expire (which seems a bit underhanded to me) and that they are "constantly experimenting" and "having fun." The limited offer comes with a $19.95 "processing fee" that brings the one-year total to $115.35, which customers must pay for up front. Essentially, you are paying for the whole year, as opposed to the month by month basis of a typical MoviePass offer.

In addition to the cheaper rate, the offer also includes a one-year subscription to the streaming service Fandor. As opposed to Netflix or Hulu, which take a broader approach to what movies they offer, Fandor's niche is that its library is full of indie movies. This includes foreign language films, so this service is really more for hardcore film buffs. Jared Leto is Fandor's chief creative officer, so, you get the idea.

This announcement comes on the heels of MoviePass cancelling the subscriptions of several customers who were accused of abusing the service. The cancellations happened to customers who used MoviePass to pay down the cost of seeing Fathom Events or Imax content, which is against the terms of the service of use. Some of these users took to the internet to complain and claimed their accounts were expelled because they were seeing too many movies.

MoviePass recently reached two million subscribers and one would wager that this new promo will attract even more customers to the platform. However, this does raise a genuine question of how MoviePass can sustain itself when it is responsible for 5% of the national box office, according to the company. Some believe that MoviePass will eventually begin selling customer data to make up the difference on the money it loses on customers who use the service too much. MoviePass continues to be a major topic of conversation, and we'll be keeping a close eye on the company to see how it continues to develop. Netflix May Be Changing Its Mind On Theatrical Runs

A few weeks ago, Netflix shocked many Hollywood insiders by securing more Emmy nominations than HBO. Now, the streaming giant is reportedly setting its sights on The Academy Awards, which has left many in the know wondering what that may mean for the pesky theatrical window problem the theater industry and Netflix have battled over since Beasts Of No Nation was released back in 2015. No one is speaking on the record yet, but sources close to the situation are saying Netflix execs may be warming up to the idea of longer theatrical runs for some of its movies.

Much of the chatter revolves around two upcoming movies: Alfonso Cuaron's Roma and Paul Greengrass' 22 July. Each is considered a possible Oscar contender, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, both directors are pushing for more than just the minimum New York and Los Angeles qualifying theatrical run needed to be eligible for awards. But will they get their way? That's an interesting question, and it could have huge long-term repercussions for the industry.

It all revolves around the so-called theatrical window. In short, movie theaters want as long as possible between when a movie is released and when people are able to consume the film inside their own homes, whether it be through On Demand, Blu-ray or a streaming service. Netflix, on the other hand, wants films to be released on its streaming service and in theaters on the same day, giving viewers the option of how they'd like to watch it. Many of the larger theater chains won't show films that don't have minimum theatrical windows. So, that means Netflix either needs to change its approach or it needs to seek out smaller arthouse-type theaters that may not have hard and fast rules.

For the past few years, Netflix has partnered with Landmark and iPic to rent out screens to show its movies. The company hasn't reported any of the theatrical grosses from any of the runs, and those runs have typically ended very quickly. Netflix has already announced Roma will be release day-and-date, meaning it'll be on the streaming service the same day as in theaters. So, for that title, the only change would likely be an expanded partnership with iPic and Landmark to include more screens throughout more of the country for a longer period of time. What exactly will happen to 22 July is still unclear.

Amazon has, over the past few years, taken the exact opposite approach. It has reached out to theaters and struck agreements to delay the streaming release of its films in order to book better and more exclusive theaters. The approach worked for Manchester By The Sea, which won multiple Academy Awards and also for The Big Sick, which netted and Oscar nomination and more than $50M at the box office.

In the long run, movie theaters aren't going away and neither are streaming services. It's in everyone's best interest for some kind of deal to be worked out. We all would prefer to watch some types of movies on the big screen and some types of movies at home, but with so much at stake, it could be awhile before all the parties decide what they can live with. Unfortunately for Netflix, if it waits too long, it could miss out on some Oscar noms from voters who refuse to vote for anything they can't see in theaters.

T heres no question that King Ghidorah is a towering monstrosity and looking to be the biggest threat the MonsterVerse has introduced yet, but that doesnt take away from the fact that it has a weird name. This Godzilla: King of the Monsters TV spot highlights that when one of the characters asks about its catchy name. Kyle Chandlers Mark Russell doesnt understand it right away and Thomas Middleditchs Sam Coleman notes how the name sounds like Gonorrhea. Theyd better hope that Ghidorah doesnt have enhanced hearing on top of its many other abilities.

Weird name aside, King Ghidorah is shaping up to be the biggest threat in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which is saying a lot given how much destruction weve seen in the footage shown so far. Ghidorah is joined by Rodan and Mothra, though it should be noted that the latter is usually depicted as a benevolent creature in the Toho monster movies from Japan, so perhaps it wont be giving humanity too much trouble. Regardless, in keeping with the monsters numerous appearance in the Toho movies over the decades, King of the Monsters King Ghidorah is described as Godzillas arch-nemesis, so its a good bet that the sequels climactic confrontation will be between these two.

Picking up five years after the events of Godzilla with the entire world now knowing about the existence of the Titans, Godzilla: King of the Monsters sees Monarch crossing paths with all of these monsters as they vie for supremacy and put humanitys very existence at stake. We can at least take comfort knowing that Earth wont be destroyed since Godzilla vs. Kong arrives next year, but there will definitely be mass casualties due to these monsters wreaking havoc, many of which we can likely lay at Kind Ghidorahs feet or wings.

Along with the previously mentioned actors, Godzilla: King of the Monsters main cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Bradley Whitford, Charles Dance, Aisha Hinds, OShea Jackson Jr., David Strathairn and Zhang Ziyi. Each of King Ghidorahs heads is played a different actor: Jason Liles, Alan Maxson and Richard Dorton.
