MoviePass Halted Repeat Viewings The Same Weekend Infinity War Came Out

Back at the tail end of 2016, MoviePass head honcho Mitch Lowe announced that the service would cut prices drastically in the hopes it could increase subscribers as well as the number of attendees at the movies. In 2017, MoviePass launched its $10 passes and various iterations of the pass have been available via various outlets in the months since. The result is that MoviePass has landed millions of subscribers, and with such a heavy volume user base, the subscription movie service has started making changes. One big change actually happened this weekend, as MoviePass made it impossible for its users to go see the same movie twice using its pass. The move coincided with the big release of Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War this weekend.

The change came to section 2.3 of MoviePass' terms of service on Friday, and you can see the new change in ALL CAPS, below.

A valid MoviePass subscription to the Service entitles you to: (1) see one (1) 2D film per calendar day through MoviePass; and (2) a single seat, depending on availability, for a 2D film showing open to the general public. The Service excludes premium showings such as: 3D films, IMAX, 4D, XD and specialty theaters. The Service is available every day of the week, subject to the theater being open, inventory, and usage. THE SERVICE PROHIBITS REPEAT VIEWINGS OF THE SAME MOVIE. Alternative or future MoviePass Service subscription plans may include (1) premium plans that provide access to 3D, IMAX, and specialty formats and (2) capped plans (limited amount of movies per month.)

The part about the service prohibiting "repeat viewings" only came into effect this weekend, but it's one of several changes that MoviePass has made since the company first offered its $10 MoviePass. Although MoviePass has seen a lot of success with its business model, even hitting 2 million subscribers, about 5 months ago the service made changes to its terms of use, at that time noting that Moviepass "reserves the right" to change its policies as well as "ticket availability" to its members. The change to seeing a movie more than once is an example of one of the ways MoviePass has changed its policies, and it may not be the end to those changes. MoviePass had also previously blocked service to some members and to some screenings of popular movies, including Red Sparrow.

MoviePass is not a new business, but it saw an explosion in growth over the past 12 months. Because of this, it's not a huge surprise that the service would see changes as it tested limits and tried to make money. There have been kinks; some customers have had problems getting their MoviePass cards after ordering and have experienced other customer service problems. The service has also tinkered with different price models, something that Netflix also did (and continues to do) after it started becoming more popular.

As for this particular change, making the move right as the summer movie season kicks off is prescient. Not only has Avengers: Infinity War already made more money on opening weekend than any other movie in history -- including Star Wars: The Force Awakens -- there are a slew of other big movies coming up like Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story, plus a ton of other stuff later this summer. If MoviePass needs to make changes to its terms of service, before the summer season is the time to do it.

A Star Is Born Rating Changed In New Zealand After Teens Are 'Triggered'

As Awards Season slowly approaches, moviegoers should expect to see plenty of Oscar bait hitting theaters in the next few months. First up to bat was Bradley Cooper's directorial debut A Star Is Born, starring he and pop star turned actress Lady Gaga. A third remake of the classic tale, Cooper brought an emotionally devastating drama to audiences, but it looks like the ending was especially intense for New Zealand moviegoers.

A Star Is Born contains an emotional gut punch, as Bradley Cooper's Jackson Maine hangs himself in his garage during the third act. This sequence proved especially upsetting for New Zealand audiences, so literature is being distributed during screenings, containing a trigger warning about a suicidal scene. While potentially a major spoiler for the contents of the film, it's a change that New Zealand film classification board head David Shanks believes is necessary after complaints started rolling in.

David Shanks recently made a statement about this decision, saying:

Many people in New Zealand have been impacted by suicide. For those who have lost someone close to them, a warning gives them a chance to make an informed choice about watching.

This comment, which comes to us from The Guardian, helps to bring context to the New Zealand film classification board's decision. The film industry has become much more cognizant of how movies affect audiences, especially when it comes to sensitive subjects like suicide. And that's also the case in New Zealand specifically.

Jackson's suicide in A Star Is Born is truly harrowing, especially the way Bradley Cooper's direction brought the terrible event to life. The jaded rock star actually made a previous attempt on his own life as a young boy. This exposition is delivered as almost an anecdote by Jackson, but it becomes clear that the event stuck with him.

After believing he will ruin Ally's life and career, Jackson lives his final day. He says goodbye to his wife and adorable dog, and hangs himself in the garage in a silent and haunting sequence. It's undoubtedly hard to sit through, and brings the momentum and joy of Jackson's newfound sobriety to a screeching halt. It also leaves Lady Gaga's character despondent while mourning.

While no doubt triggering for many, Bradley Cooper's direction of A Star Is Born kept the event offscreen, which is both understated and arguably more powerful as a choice. Moviegoers were privy to the moments before and after Jackson took his own life, with his dog's distress echoing what audiences felt in that moment.

It sounds like Todd Phillips' Joker movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix, was put together on the fly. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just makes us more curious than ever about the result, due in theaters this October. It sounds like Zazie Beetz is also curious to see how the film turns out. She plays cynical single mom Sophie Dumond in Joker, but when asked for details on the movie she seemed genuinely stumped on what to say:

I can't say anything. It's gritty and dark. I mean, I haven't seen a cut or anything. Gotham. [laughs] The script was great, we rewrote the whole thing while we were shooting it. Literally, we would go into [director/co-writer Todd Phillips] trailer and write the scene for the night and then do it. ... During hair and makeup we'd memorize those lines and then do them, and then we'd reshoot that three weeks later. We had to do everything then because Joaquin [Phoenix] had lost so much weight. We couldn't do reshoots later on, so we were figuring it out.

Wow, there's a lot to think about there. Zazie Beetz shared her intel during an MTV News interview that also included Armie Hammer. When she mentioned going into the trailer to rewrite scenes, Hammer quipped that the screenwriter of the film was going to be so pissed to hear that. Beetz added that he was in there with them, helping shape the script, presumably referring to co-writer Scott Silver, who is credited on the script with Todd Phillips.

At least it sounds like Joker won't be going back for reshoots, at least not for Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck/Joker, unless they can find a way around the weight loss issue. Phoenix is certainly known for getting deep into character, and it sounds like a real transformation is coming.

Fans already noticed Joaquin Phoenix's weight loss this past fall when he was spotted looking much thinner on the streets of New York City. Fans don't always connect weight loss with filmmaking complications, but it's true that you have to get very creative if you feel like rewriting a scene that took place when your main character was, say, 20 pounds lighter or heavier.

Zazie Beetz did credit Todd Phillips with being "quick at getting stuff done" so they had extra time to do everything after rewriting scenes. So it wasn't a rushed set in that way, but it has to be ... what? ... confusing, frustrating, or just exciting and electric to be live in the moment figuring out what will happen next?

I'd want a set script, but I'm also not an actor or filmmaker. However, I am a film watcher, and if this movie ends up feeling like it was made on the fly, then it's a problem.

This Warner Bros./DC film is separate from the DCEU of Justice League and Shazam! According to the official synopsis, Joker follows the iconic arch-nemesis through an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The tale of Arthur Fleck shows a man disregarded by society. It's meant to not only be a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker is also said to star Robert De Niro as a talk show host. Martin Scorsese was attached to the movie at one point as a producer. Together with the Joker's story, that got some fans thinking of the great film The King of Comedy as a potential touchstone for this movie. But if they rewrote the script as they went along, it's hard to know how much inspiration they drew from anything. Plans may have changed during the September to December filming schedule.

Joker also stars Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, and Shea Whigham. It's scheduled to open in theaters on October 4. Here's what else you can look forward to watching on the big screen in 2019.
