The Special Way Forest Whitaker Approached Mourning King TChaka In Black Panther

In Ryan Coogler's Black Panther, Forest Whitaker plays Zuri -- a close friend and confidant of the deceased King T'Chaka -- but if you watch his performance, something may catch your eye. Despite the fact that shortly before the start of the movie he lost one of his best friends, Zuri doesn't exactly mourn or grieve in typical fashion, which may strike some audience members as strange. The truth, however, is that there is a very good reason why we see the man shed a tear for T'Chaka, and it's all tied into the character's faith. To hear Whitaker explain it:

I think Zuri's understanding of life and death is quite different. I think that the movie does deal with grieving, because it deals with the grief of T'Challa and his father, the grief that happens from the abandonment of Killmonger. But my character, who is dealing constantly on the ancestral plane as well, dealing with a spiritual understanding, doesn't grieve because he understands the movement of our consciousness and our spirits as it continues in a continuum of the universe.

I had the great pleasure of sitting down with Forest Whitaker a couple weeks ago during the Los Angeles press junket for Black Panther, and in addition to discussing his thoughts on Wakanda border policy and who he'd like to see join the cast in a future installment, I also asked the Academy Award-winner about Zuri's grief. I was curious how he approached Zuri's emotional state when it came to mourning T'Chaka, and he fully explained why it's reasonable that we never see the character shed a tear.

In Wakanda, Zuri is the man in charge of the application of the Heart-Shaped Herb, which many Marvel fans are familiar with as the flower that gives Black Panther his incredible strength, speed and agility. One of its incredibly important other uses, however, is to allow a newly-coroneted ruler to access the ancestral plane and reconnect with past generations. T'Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, uses it and has the chance to reconnect with his father, T'Chaka, and it seems that knowledge of this link is what allows Zuri to know that T'Chaka isn't gone, but instead just on another level of existence.

But is the astral plane the afterlife? I took the opportunity to ask Forest Whitaker how he felt about this part of the Black Panther canon, and he explained it this way:

What they're viewing is their connection to their ancestors that could manifest itself in different terrains and different things. In a way there is no "afterlife" in the perspective of Zuri. Those are all continual things that are continuing to occur, and occurring as we are.

Do you even lift? Well, Alicia Vikander does. In preparation for her role as the tough-as-nails video game heroine Lara Croft, the Oscar-winning actress went through a serious physical transformation to look the part. For months prior to filming Tomb Raider, Alicia Vikander went through an intense diet and training regimen under the guidance of celebrity trainer Magnus Lygdback. When it was all said and done, Alicia Vikander had put on a whopping 12 pounds of muscle.

While 12 pounds might not seem like a lot on its own, it is. Adding muscle is no easy feat, and adding 12 pounds in even a full year would be considered a great result for most people training. Alicia Vikander was already a trained ballet dancer before taking the role, and she was obviously relatively fit. According to ET, Alicia Vikander had a slim, 5-foot-5, 117-pound frame. Adding 12 pounds of muscle, an additional 10% of her body weight in muscle to someone who is naturally small, is a huge transformation and especially impressive to achieve in just a few months time. In fact, the actress even found the weight gain jarring at first.

While you might suspect that this transformation means she basically lived in the gym, it's actually the opposite, as she had a diverse training regimen and basically worked smarter thanks to Magnus Lygdback's programming. According to USA Today, in the early days of her training, in order to bulk, Alicia Vikander ate a lot and focused on strength training with only a bit of cardio. As things progressed, she also did some mixed martial arts training and pad work, learning how to punch, kick and grapple effectively. This had the dual benefit of helping her physical transformation, while also preparing her for her fight scenes to look the part. Oh and Alicia Vikander also did rock climbing and swimming as well. She truly became the Renaissance woman and all around badass Lara Croft is known to be.

But physical fitness isn't just lifting stuff, and for most people, the diet is the toughest part; abs are revealed in the kitchen after all. Alicia Vikander was eating five times a day with most major meals focused on lean proteins, vegetables and complex carbs. She also had protein-rich snacks throughout the day to provide those crucial building blocks for muscular gain. The diet apparently worked too, because Alicia Vikander had an eight-pack when it was all said and done. While you might not get to see it in the movie, that core strength helped her with all the physicality of the role.

We often hear about incredible and dramatic physical transformation actors go through to inhabit a role, whether it be Christian Bale rocking his skeleton on the outside for The Machinist or Hugh Jackman eating enough boiled chicken for ten lifetimes. These transformations help an actor inhabit a character and look believable on screen. It's cool to hear the transformation Alicia Vikander made for Tomb Raider, and it is just one more reason to be excited about the potential of this video game adaptation. Youll recall that before J.J. Abrams returned to the Star Wars franchise to direct The Rise of Skywalker, what was then simply known as Episode IX was going to be helmed by Jurassic Worlds Colin Trevorrow. Due to creative differences with Lucasfilm, Trevorrow departed the final installment of the Skywalker Saga in September 2017, but one element from his version of the Star Wars movie can now be seen at the new Disneyland attraction Star Wars: Galaxys Edge: a ship called the TIE Echelon.

Star Wars: Galaxys Edge is now open to the public at Disneyland (if you have a reservation), but needless to say that it takes a long time for that large of an attraction to be constructed. By the time Colin Trevorrow departed Star Wars: Episode IX, Galaxys Edge was nearly a year and a half into the construction process, and even though well never see Trevorrows Episode IX, the TIE Echelon was kept as one of several life-sized ships on display.

As for what specific use the TIE Echelon had during combat, heres what Colin Trevorrow revealed:

It was part of an upgraded First Order fleet. An armed troop transportthe equivalent of a Blackhawk stealth helicopter. We wanted it to evoke memories of earlier ships while still being its own thing. If you look at the elements, its kind of a hybrid of designs from VII and VIII, with some familiar elements from OT Tie Fighters like Vaders Advanced x1. Theres a lot of history in it.

If theres one thing you can count on from The Empire and The First Order, its a lot of variations on the TIE Fighter. Assuming Colin Trevorrows Episode IX also took place a year after The Last Jedi like The Rise of Skywalker does, that would presumably give The First Order enough time to get numerous TIE Echelons into the fight against the Resistance, which has now resorted to guerrilla tactics against the Kylo Ren-led tyrannic force.

Alas, it doesnt sound like the TIE Echelon will appear in J.J. Abrams Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but because the ship is on display in Galaxys Edge, perhaps thats enough incentive to feature it in a Star Wars TV series, video game or novel down the line. At least The Rise of Skywalker wont be lacking in special TIE starfighters, as the teaser trailer shows Rey leaping over one, which is almost certainly being piloted by Kylo Ren.

Colin Trevorrow also said the following during his interview with Collider about his involvement with Star Wars: Galaxys Edge and the behind-the-scenes story on creating the TIE Echelon:

It was just a natural part of the process. The Imagineering team asked us to develop a new ship for the park while we were designing the film. I took it pretty seriouslyits not every day you get to be a part of something like that. They let me see what they were working on, so I got to see what Galaxys Edge was going to be. I think what theyve created is incredible. Its such an immersive experience.

The director didnt elaborate on provide any details on the sequence where the TIE Echelon would have shown up in Episode IX, but he still loves that ship. As for the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that is being released for the masses, specific plot details are still being kept under wraps, but itll result in the ancient conflict between the Jedi and Sith reaching its climax.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20, and those without a reservation can check out Star Wars: Galaxys Edge starting June 24.
