Quentin Tarantino Might Actually Make Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Longer

The subject of how long a movie could and should be has come up more than a couple of times in recent news cycles. And no one knows about it better than Quentin Tarantino, as hes already dropped a stealth experiment in re-editing a previous film with the extended mini-series version of The Hateful Eight, and a longer cut of Django Unchained mentioned as in the works.

And now that hes premiered his new film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood to an eager and accepting crowd at the Cannes Film Festival, hes preemptively talking about making this latest film longer than it already is.

The current cut of Quentin Tarantinos ninth film sits at the running time of 2 hours and 39 minutes. And that'a because, as Tarantino himself stated in a recent interview, he had a specific mantra when it came to how he and editor Fred Raskin decided how to put it all together. It coincides with his wishes to extend Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which he expresses in the remarks below:

I wouldnt take anything else out. Im going to explore possibly putting something back in. If anything, I wanted to go to Cannes too short. if Im going to err, Im going to err on too tight.

As the story goes, Quentin Tarantino and Fred Raskin aimed for a cut that not only satisfied what Tarantino wanted out of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, but also outpaced the old Quentin movie time frame of 2 hours and 45 minutes. Now that the jobs been done though, it feels like QT is ready to take the audiences reactions, and his own mental notes, to put some more material back into his next blockbuster picture.

He has a lot of material to work with too, as IndieWires coverage on Quentin Tarantinos latest mentioned that Fred Raskin had crafted an initial 4 hour and 20 minute cut, which basically had everything intact. So we could see the length of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood jump anywhere from a couple of minutes to a whole lot of time, depending on where Quentin Tarantino wants to go with the film.

We wouldnt expect all that much to be added back in, as after all, this is supposed to be a theatrical experience. But as with Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight (and hopefully fulfilling a promise he made years ago, Kill Bill), Once Upon A Time In Hollywood could find itself expanded into a much longer experience in the streaming and home video afterglow. That's provided its a success in the box office, as originally intended. Which, after watching the most recent trailer below, feels like a distinct possibility.

New Aladdin Clip Is Set Right Before A Whole New World'

Disneys live-action remake undertaking will soon continue with the release of a new Aladdin and fans are especially awaiting the new versions of the beloved songs from the 1992 animated musical. Is it from a new fantastic point of view? Check out this new look that sets up the highly-anticipated A Whole New World reimagining:

Swept away yet? The glimpse from Walt Disney Studios shows the beginning of Aladdin and Jasmines night before they board their magic carpet ride and break into song. Under the alias of Prince Ali, Aladdin is convincing the princess of Agrabah to leave her comfort behind the walls of the castle her confined world of books and maps and really go out and see the world with him. Before she can shoot out a round of excuses as to why she cant, he reveals his magic carpet and asks her if he trusts her.

Disney fans know the do you trust me? line is straight out of the animated film. In the original, Jasmine first meets street rat Aladdin who feeds the same quote. So when the princess hears this from Ali, she knows its the guy shed been crushing on from her rogue adventure outside the castle walls.

Its a sweet moment between the couple that is lovably reminiscent of the 1992 classic. Aladdin exudes confidence with his prince persona, as he offers to show her the world and the couple will soon break out into song. The clip ends conveniently right before the track begins, serving as the perfect tease for the upcoming live-action flick. I for one am happy they cut it where they did, a moment like this should be seen for the first time on the big screen.

The first Aladdin trailer did include a bit of the Whole New World song including the new vocals by Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott, but well likely have to wait until the movie hits theaters later this month before we see the full sequence.

Aladdin is a remake of the fairytale, this time with the Genie to be played by Will Smith. The actor will be adding his own comedic flavor to the film and rapping the characters signature track Friend Like Me. Smith recently paid a visit to Jimmy Fallon and spit a few bars and while its a departure from what we remember, its a fun new take on it.

The movie will also include two brand news songs, one another duet between Aladdin and Jasmine and the other a solo tune from Jasmine. Mena Massoud also recently teased an all-improv scene between him and Will Smith in the film.

After the under-performing result of Disneys last live-action offering Dumbo, Aladdin is tracking to have a more successful opening weekend during the Memorial Day holiday with four-day weekend projections between $85 million and $115 million.

BB-8 Puppeteer Wraps Star Wars: Episode IX After 5-Year 'Amazing Ride'

Is BB-8 saying goodbye for now or forever after Star Wars: Episode IX? It's the end of the new trilogy, but with Disney+ coming, and standalone movies hitting theaters, it's hard to imagine this is really The End.

Brian Herring is one of the puppeteers and lead performer behind BB-8. You may not think of the process that goes into creating the character, but it has been his life -- and his dream -- for the past five years. Now that many stars are wrapping their roles on Star Wars: Episode IX, Herring took a moment to thank the Lucasfilm team and look back fondly on his journey:

What a joy. Brian Herring joined the creature shop for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams returned to direct Episode IX, which has yet to reveal its title. Herring's BB-8 was also part of the saga in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson.

Brian Herring also worked on other creatures in the Star Wars galaxy, including Porgs, Fathiers, and the sea cows Luke Skywalker milked. Herring shared BB-8 puppeteer duty with Dave Chapman. And did you know Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz were both credited as "BB-8 vocal consultants" in The Force Awakens?

Brian Herring has a great interview on StarWars.com from March 2018, talking about the differences as a puppeteer going from operating a droid puppet to operating an organic creature like a Porg. He also talked about why it's important to have the practical effects puppets versus just using CGI for the movies:

Practical effects on set, I think, are so important because the actors have something to react to, but also the audience can tell if somethings not there. [...] There was a shot in The Force Awakens, where Chewbacca is on the gurney and Finn is trying to help him and BB-8 comes in. And I whizzed it in at one point and I hit a crate and I said, "Sorry, JJ! I hit the crate." He went, Hit the crate every time you come in because it shows youre there. It shows youre real and people can invest more. You do get brilliant performances, like Gollum [played by Snoke actor Andy Serkis], where you have a human performance. And all these things work best when you have a performance at the heart of them. Thats not to say that the animators arent awesome at what they do, but even if they have to go in and fix it digitally later, they have something organic and its the imperfections that make things perfect.

Good points! BB-8 is not the only droid saying his goodbyes right now. Anthony Daniels just shared his own farewell, after playing C-3PO since the very first Star Wars movie back in 1977. But it's also not clear if his goodbye was for now or forever. After all, once Return of the Jedi completed the first trilogy in 1983, no one really saw six more movies coming to the big screen with the prequels and now this new trilogy.

Star Wars: Episode IX has yet to reveal its true title or any first look footage at this point, and we're not expecting tomorrow's Super Bowl to change that. So we wait. The movie arrives in theaters on December 20, as one of the many releases of 2019.
