Mark Hamill Shows What A Han And Luke Star Wars Reunion Could've Looked Like

Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker only re-entered The Skywalker Saga at the very end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so he never got to see Han Solo again. Hamill shared a photo with Harrison Ford, giving fans his imagined look at what their reunion could've looked like, and fans replied with some strong emotions:

Maybe Lucasfilm should just let Mark Hamill retcon Star Wars' Skywalker Saga. He has been open with his ... let's call it surprise on the direction of Luke Skywalker's story in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He also recently expressed sadness that the new trilogy will never be able to have Luke, Leia, and Han Solo reunite. Han Solo was killed by his own son in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and sadly we lost actress Carrie Fisher in real life after The Last Jedi was filmed.

It has already been revealed that Carrie Fisher's General Leia Organa will appear in Star Wars: Episode IX through used footage from J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens. And we know Mark Hamill is returning for Episode IX, despite Luke's apparent death at the end of The Last Jedi. So if Luke is returning, does that give hope that we could see spirit Han Solo again -- like the Force ghosts who gathered at the end of Return of the Jedi?

Han Solo wasn't a Jedi, but he's Han, so ... it would just be great to see him again, even if Harrison Ford only agreed to a cameo. But at this point Episode IX is finished filming, and Mark Hamill knows what they filmed. So if his photo is the imagined Han/Luke reunion, it sounds like even Force ghost dreams may not come true.

Han Solo and Luke Skywalker were last seen together in Episode VI, Return of the Jedi. But Han and Leia's son Kylo Ren was later trained by Luke Skywalker. That went wrong in spectacular fashion, as we learned in The Last Jedi.

Fans have voiced many frustrations with the first two films in the new trilogy, with one being the lack of the original trio -- Luke, Leia, and Han. The Force Awakens even had Leia hug new character Rey after Han died, instead of embracing Han's best friend Chewbacca. Episode IX is bringing back one old school frenemy in Lando, and it will be great to see him again, but it can't make up for the missed opportunity of getting the old gang back together again for the end of the Saga.

Star War: Episode IX has a lot of questions to answer, including how Luke returns and how we say goodbye to Leia on screen. Also, the title would be nice. Some answers, and maybe a trailer, could be coming soon via Star Wars Celebration 2019. The movie itself opens in theaters December 20 as one of the many movies heading to the big screen in 2019.

Aquaman Will Have Key Flashbacks To The Heros Past

To use the genre parlance, James Wan's Aquaman is primarily a solo character adventure, being set after the events of Zack Snyder's Justice League, but it is also an origin story. Part of the film's mission is to explain where the eponymous hero comes from and who he is meant to be, and as a result there are segments of the narrative dedicated to his past. Specifically, there are numerous flashback sequences throughout the blockbuster -- and while I was on the set last year, I learned key details about a few of them.

In July 2017, literally the day after San Diego Comic-Con, I joined a small group of other journalists on a trip to Melbourne, Australia to visit the set of Aquaman while it was still filming, and the day started off with a tour of the War Room -- a meeting space in the production office that has walls covered in concept art. While looking at these pieces, production designer Bill Brzeski took us through what we were looking at, including some key moments in the life of Arthur Curry (played as an adult by Jason Momoa).

The first we learned about is set at the Boston Aquarium, which Arthur visits when he is 10 years old. The facility famously has a giant aquarium that stretches stories high, and our young hero is pushed up against it by some bullies. This gets a notable reaction from all of the sentient life in the tank, and they quickly take action. Said Brzeski,

All of a sudden all the creatures in the aquarium... start banging on the glass, coming to rescue him, and he doesn't even understand why. All the other kids freak out. So we're in this aquarium. It's beautiful. All of a sudden, all these animals are banging on the glass. Sharks are trying to get him and get the other kids. Everybody freaks out. So that's one flashback.

Clearly this is an early preview of Arthur Curry's important relationship with undersea life, though in this instance he doesn't communicate with the fish on purpose. After all, at age 10 he doesn't known that his mother is Atlanna, the queen of Atlantis who is played by Nicole Kidman in the movie. It isn't until later that he learns the truth, which is a moment that is captured in another one of Aquaman's flashback.

These won't be the only flashbacks featured in Aquaman, but they certainly do give texture to how the movie is going to be approaching the titular heroes important backstory. In a world where we are regularly seeing more standard origin stories play out on the big screen, this sounds like a welcome reprieve.

Aquaman will be in theaters on December 21st.

One Disney Executive's Thoughts On Solo's Opening Weekend

Solo: A Star Wars Story had an opening weekend that many films would sell their soul to get, but for a summer blockbuster Star Wars film, it came in below expectations. Now, Disney is starting to examine why. While there will certainly be a lot of questions that need answering, Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis certainly has some thoughts on why Solo barely broke the $100 million mark over the four-day weekend. One potential issue is that there were simply too many big movies coming out in too small a window. According to Hollis...

There's a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies. Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period? Let's measure how we feel about this until more time passes.

Theater competition is always an important component of the box office and it's something that, for the most part, Star Wars hadn't had to deal with previously. While the holiday season has become the second biggest time of year at the movies, the competition simply wasn't as stiff for the previous Star Wars films that Disney has released. As Dave Hollis points out to THR, Solo: A Star Wars Story went up against Deadpool 2 as well as Disney's own Avengers: Infinity War, and it's certainly possible that a lot of moviegoers simply needed a break from the theater after the first two. A lot of people go to the movies frequently but the majority of fans can't be there every weekend for any number of reasons and they had to make choices.

Of course, It bears pointing out that Lucasfilm had an opportunity to avoid this issue. When Solo went through major changes behind the scenes and found itself with a new director it had every reason to delay its release, but Lucasfilm held firm to the May 25 date it had chosen. Now, it seems maybe they're wondering if that was the right call.

Of course, there could be any number of reasons why the box office did what it did, the good news, for Lucasfilm, is that they have some time to analyze things and figure out what happened before their next movie comes out.

We have a lot of work to do in trying to understand this. We are all over it and will spend a lot of time digging into why things happened the way they did in various markets. We have a year and a half before Episode IX comes out.

While Solo: A Star Wars Story didn't turn out as expected, it likely would have still been ok for the film to make less money. The problem is that due to everything that happened behind the scenes the budget for the film clearly ballooned and cost a lot more than it was supposed to. The studio will likely wait for the dust to clear and see where Solo finally ends up before really trying to understand what happened, but you can be sure this will be a major topic of conversation at the studio for a long time to come.
