This Rotten Week: Predicting The Happytime Murders And A.X.L. Reviews

Late August? Who cares. The movie train never stops rolling, and we've got two new titles heading our way in wide release this Friday. This week we've got puppets gone wild and A.I. dogs on the loose. Get ready for The Happytime Murders and A.X.L.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

The Happytime Murders is either going to be the funniest movie in a long while, or going to be an epic bomb. And I see very little room for possibilities in between. Such is the way for an off-brand flick like this, turning the Muppets brand on its head with a borderline NC-17 flick about a world where puppets and humans interact. They've taken the idea to what looks like a pretty extreme degree, and I actually think it will work.

This might end up being the quintessential look at how puppets actually interact with humans, and I think I'm going to love it. It's such a weird logical conclusion for the director Brian Henson, Jim Henson's second son, who gets to take puppeteering in a new, awesome direction. And while it's brought to you by a son of Jim Henson, this is definitely not for kids. I think that's even better for the returns and I want to believe, very hard, that The Happytime Murders is going to be hilarious. The red band trailer speaks for itself about the movie's goals.

If movies like A.X.L. or shows like Stranger Things have taught us anything (and there have been a ton of them), it's that randomly wandering on to secret military bases and interacting with the projects/test subjects within is a super easy venture. It's kind of natural in some ways. Just crawl under the fence or ride your (motor)bike on to the property, and you'll be knee-deep in a government conspiracy - probably even making a best friend in the process.

Such is the case with A.X.L., in which a teenager stumbles across a super-A.I. canine who becomes the human's best friend. But then they, of course, inevitably run afoul of the creators who want to do (something) with the crazy cool-but-weird government experiment. The flick looks schlocky and canned, made exactly for a pre-teen audience who will also likely think the whole thing is corny. I appreciate the effort, but this movie will stink.

Oof, last time around was another very bad week for the Rotten Watch - and it would have been a hell of a lot worse if I hadn't seen some of the early reviews on Crazy Rich Asians (Predicted: 93% Actual: 92%). My prediction for this flick would have been almost assuredly way, way lower had a bunch of reviews not already been in on the positive side of things. This saved me from possibly my worst week ever since starting this column many years ago. I thought the movie looked corny at best, terrible at worst. I guess I was way wrong on that point.

Then there were the other movies on the slate. Alpha (Predicted: 52% Actual: 84%) finished as one of the better critically-reviewed movies of the summer. Critics kind of swooned, praising it for the overall tone and story while being forgiving of its historical timeline lapses. Regardless, my prediction was way off the mark and I thought a movie like this coming out this late in the summer wouldn't score much above the halfway mark. I couldn't' have been more wrong.

Finally, Mile 22 (Predicted: 41% Actual: 20%) just sucked. I gave my prediction a Mark Wahlberg/Peter Berg bump on a movie I thought looked shaky at best, but I factored in the star/director team as reason to get it close to the acceptable level. The movie just didn't hit the mark, however, with critics complaining about, well, everything. They hated it from top the bottom.

Chris Pratt Opens Up About His Feelings After James Gunn's Firing

The world of fandom was disrupted in a major way last month when James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for a series of offensive tweets that he posted years ago. Following that move by Marvel Studios, many fans and insiders have flocked to the web to support Gunn, including his principal cast from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Now, Chris Pratt has addressed the firing of Gunn, noting that his friendship with Gunn and his love of the franchise makes this a complicated situation. Pratt explained his feelings further, noting,

It's not an easy time. We all love James and he's a good friend of ours, but we also really love playing the Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a complicated situation for everybody. And you know, we just want to move forward and do what's right and be the best people we can be.

That obviously makes quite a bit of sense. Though the entire cast of Guardians of the Galaxy has come out in support of James Gunn, Chris Pratt notes he is also incredibly passionate about the franchise and his role in it. Chris Pratt seems supportive of Gunn and genuinely upset about what has happened, and now one of the primary goals is to find a way to move forward and make the franchise work in its third installment.

Aside from these remarks, Chris Pratt has remained fairly silent on the James Gunn matter in interviews over the course of the last few weeks. In fact, Pratt elaborated on his comments to The Associated Press (via Star Tribune) and noted that he intentionally didn't do many interviews at San Diego Comic-Con and said most of what he needed to say in the recent statement released by the Guardians cast. Pratt said:

I love going to Comic-Con but I ended up not doing a lot of interviews around that time just because it was so shocking. All I know is we put a lot of time, thought and effort into the statement that we released about it. And I think we all kind of want that statement to be essentially what we have to say about it. And we were pretty clear and honest about how we feel.

On top of all of that, Chris Pratt has also used his platform to suggest that Gunn should be reinstated as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. You can check out his earlier post on the matter, below.

With all of that said, we're now left in a position where we have to wait and see what will become of James Gunn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though some reports have stated that Gunn won't be rehired for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, other rumors have suggested that the folks at Marvel Studios are pushing Disney to do just that and bring him back. For now, however, the project (which is aiming for a 2020 release) remains director-less.

Only time will tell what will ultimately happen with James Gunn, Marvel Studios, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Until we learn more about what the studio plans to do, you can still catch The Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War, which is currently in theaters, and you can find the rest of Earth's mightiest heroes in the final Phase 3 adventure next year when Avengers 4 premieres on May 3, 2019.

Creed II was about facing up to the ghosts of one's past, but it seems that at one point there may have been a plan to include an actual ghost. Dolph Lundgren recently revealed that in an early script of Creed II there was apparently a plan for the story to include Apollo Creed himself. Lundgren much prefers the decision to bring back another Rocky IV co-star, Brigitte Nielsen, instead. According to Lundgren...

It was a great idea I thought [to bring Nielsen back]. In the original first draft it was Apollo came back. Or like his ghost or something. It was a little hokey, you know. So I think it was much better to bring Brigitte back.

Unfortunately, Dolph Lundgren doesn't elaborate on his comments, which he made during a Q&A at Monster-Mania Con 42 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey over this past weekend. That means we have no idea exactly how this idea of Apollo Creed returning in Creed II was originally supposed to be handled.

Sylvester Stallone has recently stated that he now feels the decision to kill Apollo Creed in Rocky IV may have been the wrong one, if only because he so enjoyed working with actor Carl Weathers. Perhaps that led Stallone, who co-wrote the screenplay for Creed II, to try and find a way to include him.

Obviously, it seems unlikely that the actual plan had been to include Apollo Creed's ghost. Perhaps there would have been a dream sequence of some kind where either Rocky or Adonis Creed finds himself across from Apollo. Of course, just creating a "ghost" version of Apollo would have been one of the more complicated things in the movie. Creed II isn't exactly a visusal effects blockbuster but a lot of that would have been necessary to bring Apollo Creed back.

However you look at it, it feels awkward, which is probably why the scene never made it into the final film. Still, the desire to include Apollo, and Carl Weathers, in the movie in some way certainly makes sense. It's understandable that people would want to try. There's just no good way to do it.

And at the same time, if Apollo Creed doesn't die in Rocky IV, then Creed II, really the entire Creed franchise becomes an entirely different pair of films. Apollo's death in Rocky IV is one of the iconic moments of the entire series.

In the end, bringing Brigitte Nielsen back for Creed II was clearly something that was much easier to do. And it was certainly impactful as well. Nielsen's return helps put the story of Ivan Drago into a context that we never got to see in Rocky IV. It makes the villain of the earlier movie a much more sympathetic character in the sequel.

While bringing Apollo back in any way would have been a nice nod, it would not have meant as much to the actual story. And who knows. There's always Creed III.
