Why Queen Was Really Reluctant To Do Bohemian Rhapsody At First

It was a long road to the screen for Bohemian Rhapsody, but the movie almost didn't get made at all. The idea of doing a biopic about Freddie Mercury and Queen had apparently been suggested to the surviving band members before, but they had previously rejected the idea since it would be so difficult to turn Mercury's story into the right sort of movie. However, eventually they apparently all realized that if they didn't do it, somebody else would. According to Queen member Brian May...

We were a little reluctant in the beginning because it's difficult to do a film that would do Freddie justice and what happened over the years---because it was suggested to us a lot---we realized if we didn't get involved then somebody else would do it and you wouldn't be able to protect Freddie's kind of legacy. So, we got involved. It's a long journey, probably 10 years since we've been talking to people, really getting things ready.

The musician biopic is such a popular genre that it's even received its own spoof. Brian May is almost certainly right that, eventually, somebody was going to come along and make the movie about Freddie Mercury and Queen with or without them The music is too iconic and Freddie Mercury was just too big a character to not want to make a movie about his life.

The members of Queen apparently felt that if it was going to happen, they were in the best position to make sure the story was told right. Brian May tells Flicks and the City they wanted to be able to protect Mercury's legacy. One assumes they also wanted to protect their own legacy as well, as any movie about him can't be told without the rest of Queen being major players in the story.

At the same time, the fact that it took the better part of a decade to find the right people shows that nobody went into this project too fast or didn't think things through. Multiple actors were attached to play Freddie Mercury over the years, whether the actor changes caused the delays, or the delays caused the changes, it shows there was clearly a larger vision that wasn't going to move forward just for the sake of getting the movie made.

And in the end, it appears to have paid off. Bohemian Rhapsody is a global hit, having brought in over a half billion dollars at the box office. It's without question a fun movie.

Whether or not it protects Freddie Mercury's legacy is a different question. The movie certainly doesn't sugar coat his life, nor should it, though the film also makes some significant changes to the actual timeline of Mercury's life, so one wonders just how true to the man it actually is.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Crazy Rich Asians, Alpha And Mile 22 Reviews

This week we get a wedding in Singapore, an elite C.I.A. ops team and a teenager fighting for survival at the end of an ice age. Get ready for Crazy Rich Asians, Mile 22 and Alpha.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Ever wondered about the lifestyles of the ultra-rich and famous in Southeast Asia? If so, then this movie should help answer at least some of those questions. Wrapped in the rom-com genre, Crazy Rich Asians tells the fish-out-of-water story of a young woman who visits her fiancee's family in Singapore only to realize they are richer than some small nations.

The movie is sitting at 100% on the Tomatometer through 25 reviews which saves me the modest embarrassment of being light years off with my prediction. The trailer didn't appear to offer much in the way of real laughs, relying more on the bling visuals than any actual story. That, coupled with director Jon Chu's previous work (Now You See Me 2 - 34%, Jem and the Holograms - 19%, G.I. Joe Retaliation - 29%) would have had me scraping the lower third percentile with any kind of prediction. But critics are loving it, praising both the story and the acting. Crazy Rich Asians looks like a critical winner, even if the score does drop some over the course of the week.

I like how, at this point in his career, Mark Wahlberg just plays himself and lets the setting and story around him do the changing. It's not a complaint, but rather I find it refreshing. When you go to a Mark Wahlberg movie, you basically know what you are going to get from him. And Mile 22 doesn't appear to buck that trend in any way. In it, Wahlberg leads a crack, covert CIA group in a race against time to move a witness 22 miles while a whole host of neer-do-wells brings the heavy guns trying to stop them. It looks quite entertaining.

Director Peter Berg and Wahlberg have a thing going here with the former's last three movies (including Patriots Day - 80% and Deepwater Horizon - 83%) also starring the latter. I don't think this latest finishes nearly as high as those two considering they were drawing heavy emotion and drama from real-life events. We probably have to go back to Berg films like Hancock (41%) and Battleship (34%) for a better comp here. I think Mile 22 finishes closer to that range, an exciting and action-packed film without a ton of substance.

Imagine how unlucky you need to be (on a macro level) to be born during the last gasp of the final Ice Age, but then also (on a micro level) to spend your possible final moments being hurled off a cliff by an angry buffalo. So goes Alpha, the story of one young man who has to survive the bitter, pre-modern wilderness with just himself and a trusty wolf by his side.

It's a little tough to tell from the trailers if there's any actual talking in this film. The titular Alpha has some voice over stuff in the trailer, but the actual on-screen work looks mostly silent. Conceptually and within its cinematography, the flick looks cool though I wonder if it can deliver for the duration on the story. Director Albert Hughes' most recent work is The Book of Eli (47%) but before that, it had been more than a decade since his last films. I think Alpha comes in better than average, but I don't think it's an absolute critical darling.

It wasn't a strong week for the Rotten Watch with all three movies falling out of range, and only one all that close.

My biggest miss was Dog Days (Predicted: 39% Actual: 60%) where I really screwed the pooch (so to speak). By and large, critics like the sentimental and dog-loving aspects of the film which helped it to overcome some plot issues. It wasn't fantastic by any means, but critics thought there were enough laughs to go along with the heartstring-tugging to keep it above average. If anything, I thought my prediction was too high, because I equated this film to other ensemble work like Valentine's Day (18%) or New Year's Eve (9%). That was an unfair assumption and Ken Marino's film outperformed my expectations.

Meanwhile, I should have gone much lower with Slender Man (Predicted: 37% Actual: 15%). Here I got caught a bit off guard with the look and feel of the movie. The trailer gave me a sense of strong visuals and a general creepiness that would keep it out of the critical basement. That was an incorrect assumption and the critics really panned this thing. It didn't get all the way down to single digits, but man it made a push to get there.

And finally, The Meg (Predicted: 38% Actual: 49%) was a near miss and would need two more negative reviews to bring it with the ten percent range. On a high level, I got the tone of the reviews correct in that the movie was equal part silly and entertaining, playing on the public's infatuation with all things shark. But I thought it looked a bit too silly to finish this close to the middle.

5 Questions We Have Before Seeing Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

The summer movie season is underway and this week, it's Godzilla's turn to take the spotlight. The long-awaited sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, arrives this weekend. The film will see Godzilla collide with other iconic kaiju like Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah, finally rendering these monster fights in state-of-the-art visual effects. While reviews for the sequel have been a bit middling out of the gate, King of the Monsters is still tracking for a worldwide debut of $230-$235 million.

While marketing hasn't been shy about showing off the monsters and their brawls, there are a few secrets still left to figure out. For starters, not too much is known about the plot or the human element of the film. The last thing that anyone seeing a Godzilla movie cares about are the humans, but someone needs to explain stuff in between monster fights. So, before checking out King of the Monsters this weekend, these are the five questions we still have about the sequel.

Whose Side Is Vera Farmiga On?King of the Monsters has an all-new cast of humans, chief among them Vera Farmiga. The actress plays Emma, a scientist who has created a device that allows for communication with the Titans (ie giant monsters). While Emma is quoted in one of the trailers talking about how the Titans are the only things that can save the planet, a different trailer shows her freeing King Ghidorah from his icy prison.

Ghidorah is kind of a near limitless death machine, so that makes Emma's allegiances questionable. Is she a secret villain or did she just make a desperate decision? She also preaches for letting Godzilla loose, presumably to help clean up Ghidorah's mess, which would indicate that she's a good guy, so she's all over the map.

Also, What's Up With Charles Dance?Speaking of questionable humans, Charles Dance looks to be set up as the human antagonist in the film. The Game of Thrones star is playing Alan Jonah, a former MI6 agent who went rogue. Apparently, he wants to use the Titans to restore the natural order. That's a pretty vague agenda, so it's not clear what he wants or why he thinks he can accomplish his goals.

Originally, fans theorized that Charles Dance's character was an older version of Tom Hiddleston's from Kong: Skull Island. However, that doesn't seem to be the case, even though it would have been a nice way to connect the MonsterVerse movies before Godzilla vs Kong. Instead he will be an all-new character and one who is evidently not on the side of humanity. It would not shock me if he's eaten before the credits roll.

Will Other Famous Godzilla Foes Appear?Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan are arguable the most iconic of Godzilla's fellow monsters, but the King of Kaiju has fought plenty of more opponents in his long cinema history. However, this film is already packed with monsters, so anything more than a quick cameo is probably out of the question. There are no shortage of options for cameos and eagle-eyed Gozilla fans are sure to be looking for any detail they can find.

We do know, however, that other Titans exist in this world. The trailers make it pretty explicit that giant monsters are coming out of the woodwork, and it's not crazy to think that some of these will be recognizable to fans. If nothing else, it could offer some teases for what to expect in any potential sequels.

How Do Mothra And Rodan Factor In?The title fight of the sequel is Godzilla vs Ghidorah, but where does that leave Mothra and Rodan? Are the two just meant to warm-up fight to get the crowd going? Are they unknown agents meant to shake things up? It's tough to see where the two fit into the picture when Godzilla has got his sights set on a certain three-headed dragon.

The two monsters have a long history in the Godzilla franchise as both allies and enemies of Godzilla. Mothra is more often than not on Godzilla's side while Rodan usually just does whatever he feels like. There's sure to be plenty of action for the two of them, but juggling their powers and entrances into the film likely wasn't an easy task.

Will There Be A King Kong Tease?While we can only focus on what's right in front of us, we can't help but think of what this is all building to. In just one year, two of the most iconic movie monsters will fight it out in Godzilla vs Kong. King of the Monsters is the last movie before the big blockbuster, so the chances feel pretty good that there will be some king of tease for King Kong and Skull Island.

The question is: What kind of tease? Will it just be a name drop or a glimpse at some clearly labeled "Skull Island" files? Better yet, will Kong actually show up onscreen, most likely in a post credits scene? Kong hasn't been seen since Kong: Skull Island, and you better believe that the studio wants you to remember that movie as we start making our way to Godzilla vs Kong.

People don't typically go to a Godzilla movie to find out what the humans are up. They just want to see Godzilla square off against the latest threat to his kingdom, and by the sounds of it, this sequel delivers on that front. As movie fans, we just can't help wondering about the finer details, and while I'm totally there to see Godzilla blast a molten pterodactyl or a big moth or whatever, I also wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about what happens in the quieter moments.

Thankfully, we don't have to wait very long at all to find out the answer to these questions. Godzilla: King of the Monsters premieres tonight and will be available for your viewing pleasure all weekend. Never mind Lady Gaga, Warner Bros. is the real star that rose in 2018. Disney seems to own just about everything at this point, so it's no surprise when one of its brands tops the box office. But Warner Bros. deserves a hat tip for still managing to set a new box office record during the same year as Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Incredibles 2.

Warner Bros.'s worldwide box office passed $5.6 billion in ticket sales, Variety reports, which was its biggest year to date, and up 9% from 2017. Much of the credit for that is being given to Aquaman -- DCEU's top movie worldwide, and it's still going strong into 2019 -- but also The Meg, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, and Ready Player One. More on their respective contributions in a minute.

That worldwide total is from a combination of roughly $1.95 billion domestic and $3.6 billion foreign. The foreign box office marked a jump of 17% from 2017, topping the previous record of $3.17 billion from 2014.

So the big story here is WB's improvement at the overseas box office, and how much that helped it reach a new record overall. It's also a promising story for moving forward, since the international box office was such a major player in 2018 in general -- from WB's Aquaman to Sony's Venom. It's no longer a death sentence for a studio or franchise if the U.S./Canada crowd sniffs at your movies.

As Variety noted, Warner Bros.'s 2018 saw record years in 21 territories -- including the all-important China, but also Russia, and Ukraine. Movies like Ready Player One and Rampage that did only OK business at the North American domestic box office were able to make big bucks overseas.

The DCEU's Aquaman just opened on December 21, but it was Warner Bros.'s top-grossing title of the year, with $866 million worldwide and counting. So far -- as of the first week of January 2019 -- $229M of that is from the domestic market and $637M from the foreign box office. We keep talking about the impact of China, and it has given Aquaman $261,246,391 on its own.

WB's second-biggest hitter was the Fantastic Beasts sequel, Crimes of Grindelwald, which picked up $629 million worldwide, from $157.5M domestic and around $472M worldwide, per Box Office Mojo. That's actually less than the first film ($814M total, from $234M domestic, $580M worldwide) but it was enough to take second for WB in 2018.

Ready Player One is another film that "only" made $138 million at the domestic box office but picked up $445 million overseas for a total of roughly $583 million, putting it behind Aquaman and Grindelwald. Jason Statham's The Meg also did big business overseas for the team -- earning $145.5M domestic and $385M foreign for a total around $530M.

Smaller films like A Star Is Born and Crazy Rich Asians also made money for WB, especially at the domestic box office, in a flip of the blockbusters script. Their lower budgets and high U.S. takes made for nice profits -- plus, it's looking like A Star Is Born is going to have its name-dropped multiple times at the 2019 Oscars.

So Warner Bros. ended 2018 just behind Disney for market share. That's what usually happens anyway, but at least this year WB can pop some champagne over its biggest year to date. We'll have to wait and see how 2019 treats the studio. It's looking like a big one for the Mouse House, but there's so much crowded into the year that moviegoers are going to be the real winners.
