Why John Krasinski Didn't Initially Ask Emily Blunt To Join A Quiet Place

In addition to just being a fantastic movie, A Quiet Place was the first time that husband and wife John Krasinski and Emily Blunt got to appear on screen together, but it almost didn't happen. While Krasinski both wrote and directed A Quiet Place, and thus had a significant amount of decision making power, he initially didn't ask his wife to join him on the recent film. While he says he and Blunt had always talked about working together, it seems that the idea of asking her to work on a film he was directing had some significant pitfalls regardless of what happened. According to Krasinski...

We'd always talked about working together, but we didn't want the story of us being married to supersede whatever story we could tell. I didn't want to pressure her, if I asked her and she said no, I wasn't sure how that would go for my day and if I asked her and she said yes to help me out or do me a favor that wouldn't go well either. I just didn't say anything.

It would be one thing if John Krasinski and Emily Blunt were both simply acting together on some other project but with Krasinski directing A Quiet Place, the relationship dynamic changes. If she had decided not to do it, which wouldn't have been surprising, then you just got rejected by your wife, which is no fun. If she said yes because she felt some sort of obligation even though she didn't really want to it, you have a whole other set of relationship problems. The way John Krasinski explains it in one of the featurettes attached to the new A Quiet Place Blu-ray, it was just easier not to ask.

As it turns out, however, John Krasinski didn't really need to ask Emily Blunt if she wanted to be in the movie, as that happened organically anyway. It seems Blunt was more than happy to have somebody else play the role, as she had been suggesting different actresses based on what information she had picked up discussing the film with her husband. However, that all changed once she actually read the script.

As I was pitching her ideas that I was writing in the script she started listing actresses that she thought would be good for the part and then one day we were on a plane together and she said 'do you mind if I read the script?' I'll never forget, she turned to me and she looked sick. 'You can't let anyone else do this movie.'

It seems that Emily Blunt didn't really see what her husband was working on until she read it, and once she did, she insisted on being part of it. Considering how important the character relationships are to the film, the real chemistry between these two only helped the final product. A Quiet Place is available on Digital and Blu-ray now.

Netflix Reports Bird Box Just Hit A Streaming Milestone

Netflix's Bird Box has become something of a pop culture phenomenon over the month since its release. The movie spawned countless memes and a Bird Box challenge that people are taking to such extremes that car accidents are happening. However, the most surprising thing about the film may be the sheer number of people who have actually seen it. Netflix has announced that an estimated 80 million households have viewed the movie.

The reveal came during Netflix's Q4 earnings report (via Variety) where the streaming giant continued a new trend of actually releasing hard data to say that not only have 80 million households apparently seen Bird Box, but several of them have apparently seen it more than once, as Netflix says the film is seeing a high number of repeat viewings.

This data follows on numbers Netflix released via Twitter that claimed over 45 million households had viewed the movie in the first seven days. This has been a significant change for the streaming service, who has previously been tight-lipped regarding how many people are actually watching any given content. However, when the numbers look as good as they do for Bird Box it's not too shocking that the company wants to tout the success, especially when it comes to trying to impress investors.

The problem, of course, is that since Netflix hasn't released numbers like this for other films, it's difficult to compare Bird Box to other Netflix films. In the case of the first seven days number, Netflix claimed that was a record viewership, so it's a good bet that the 80 million number is as well.

Nielsen did its own tracking of Netflix's numbers and while the company didn't come up with numbers quite as high as Netflix, it did find that Bird Box was the most watched Netflix movie ever in its first week, surpassing the Will Smith urban fantasy movie Bright.

Netflix also revealed some details about how it counts views. A subscriber only needs to complete 70% of a TV show or movie for Netflix to count them, so it's theoretically possible that some of those 80 million haven't actually seen the end of Bird Box even though they're being counted as having seen it.

At the end of Q3 of 2018 Netflix had 137 million subscribers worldwide, which would indicate that more than half of the people in the world who own Netflix have seen Bird Box. That's a remarkable attachment rate. It's great news for Netflix as it means their exclusive content is incredibly valuable to the users, meaning they're much more likely to continue subscribing.

It will be interesting to see if Netflix continues to give us a look behind the curtain even when viewing numbers aren't this impressive.

Ryan Reynolds Is Vowing To Find The Person Who Leaked Deadpool Test Footage

Deadpool has become one of the biggest comic book movie franchises around and it's all thanks to some leaked test footage. Over the weekend was the four year anniversary of the leak of that footage, and Ryan Reynolds took the opportunity to announce that, since the person responsible for the leak has never been caught, he will be taking over the search. No word if Reynolds will be checking nearby mirrors for suspects.

Ryan Reynolds seems awfully upset that his passion project finally got off the ground after somebody leaked the test footage he shot in an attempt to get Fox to greenlight the project. Initially, the studio passed on Deadpool but after the test footage hit the internet and fans went crazy for it, the studio took another look and decided to let the movie go forward. Not only was the film one of the highest grossing R-rated movies of all time, but it spawned a sequel that became a hit in its own right.

I'm not saying that Ryan Reynolds is absolutely the guilty party when it comes to the leak, but he is without question one of the prime suspects. It's also a fairly safe bet that even if Ryan Reynolds wasn't the one who leaked the footage, he knows who did, and yet, I don't expect that he'll be turning in the guilty party anytime soon.

More likely, he'll be buying that person a beer, because he owes them quite a lot. We simply would never have seen a Ryan Reynolds Deadpool movie, and likely would never have seen a Deadpool movie of any kind, without the leak. Whoever leaked the footage was counting on building a groundswell of support from fans and was certain that the fans would love what they saw and so took the chance by sending the footage out there.

Of course, if the footage hadn't resulted in the desired effect, it seems the leaker would have been ok as their identity has never been revealed. Reynolds and Deadpool director Tim Miller are the two major suspects, though it may have also been the screenwriters Rhett Reese or Paul Wernick. Nobody has spilled the beans about which one actually did it.

It's sort of amazing that in the four years since the leak we got not one but two Deadpool films, with an X-Force movie currently in the writing stages. At this point, it's the only part of Fox's Marvel empire that seems to be firing on all cylinders, which means it's the only part that people are confident Disney might keep around once they take control of the X-Men universe once again.

Although, with Fox now having officially begun its merger with Disney, perhaps the guilty party will finally be willing to confess once Fox ceases to exist and nobody there can punish the person who did it.
