Disney Would Control A Huge Chunk Of The Box Office If The Fox Deal Goes Through

It's no surprise that the pending Disney/Fox merger has the potential to drastically change the movie industry, but just how much of it one company could actually control is remarkable. Together, Disney and Fox are responsible for about half of 2018's domestic box office as of now, and if Disney ends up that big a force all by itself, the ramifications could be felt in every corner of the business.

While an analyst tells CNN that he expects the total combined share of Disney and Fox to shrink to 40% of the box office total by the end of the year, because the two studios have released most of their major films of the year already, that's still a quite impressive percentage. Disney has been the top studio by percentage the last two years, and is currently, and Fox hasn't been lower than fourth since 2013.

This combined power has the potential to give Disney even more weight to throw around than it already has. Last year it was reported that Disney was expecting a higher than normal percentage of ticket sales for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and with the added power of Fox, the bargaining position for Disney with regards to all its films is only improved. With additional tentpole franchises to play with, like the X-Men and Avatar, Disney would likely be able to control the entire release calendar, staking out whatever windows it wants, and leaving whatever remains for everybody else.

But blockbusters aren't the only place where Disney would have significant power. One of the companies that Disney will be picking up if this deal goes through is Fox Searchlight, known for creating higher prestige films like the most recent Best Picture winner, The Shape of Water. While Disney has made attempts to make those sorts of movies in the past, it has met with limited success. There's no reason to believe that Fox Searchlight, however, won't continue to make high-quality, award-winning, movies into the future, so Disney could become a major player in this market segment without having to do much of anything.

While there are certainly elements of the Disney/Fox deal that are potentially great from the standpoint of a movie fan, like seeing the X-Men join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from a business standpoint, the deal is a bit more concerning. Certainly, market share isn't the be all, end all. There's nothing Disney's new company can do to outright prevent other studios from having successful movies, but it will certainly put Disney in a position where it has a level of control of the industry that no studio has ever had before. Even once the deal is done, which hasn't happened yet, it will take some time before these changes really take place, but you can be sure they will happen.

Why Deadpool 2 Is Being Praised By GLAAD

It's a very exciting time to be a Marvel fan. While cinephiles are still recovering from the emotionally devastating contents of Avengers: Infinity War, another massively popular blockbuster has also returned to theaters. Deadpool 2 has finally arrived, bringing the fourth wall breaking title character back to the silver screen for a much bigger and more expansive adventure. While Deadpool 2 is making tons of money and getting great reviews, LGBT advocacy organization GLAAD has its own unique praise for the sequel. The group has spoken out about the power of including a same sex superhero couple, with Negasonic Teenage Warhead and her girlfriend Yukio. GLAAD Sarah Kate Ellis released a statement about the characters, saying:

20th Century Fox have finally given countless moviegoers around the world what they've longed to see- LGBTQ superheroes in a relationship who protect the world together. Negasonic and Yukio's storyline is a milestone in a genre that too often renders LGBTQ people invisible, and should send a message to other studios to follow this example of inclusive and smart storytelling.

While not a major aspect of Deadpool 2, the movie did manage to break new ground for the superhero genre. Negasonic Teenage Warhead introduces Deadpool to her girlfriend Yukio at their time spend in the X-Mansion, with the duo of heroes eventually briefly joining the final battle against Juggernaut. And just like that, the first LGBT superhero couple has arrived in a comic book movie.

Sarah Kate Ellis' comments from the GLAAD website celebrate a step forward in a larger conversation that has been surrounding the entertainment industry. Following controversies like #OscarsSoWhite, there has been a call for proper inclusion and visibility in the media. This includes stories about people of color, proper representation for women, as well as LGBT characters. Audiences want to see their experiences reflected through mainstream media, so having the first gay X-Men storyline in the franchise is a significant moment.

The call for queer characters in major franchises has been happening for a few years now, especially in regards to the superhero genre and Star Wars franchise. JJ Abrams has maintained that queer characters are coming to the galaxy far, far away, and the writers of Solo: A Star Wars Story recently revealed that Lando Calrissian is pansexual. Negasonic and Yukio's relationship is presented as fact, and it's not even a big plot point in the movie.

It should be interesting to see if Deadpool's own sexuality is addressed in a future film. Like Lando, Deadpool identifies as pansexual in the Marvel comics. This basically means that he doesn't factor gender into potential romantic partners, and is open to connections with all sorts of people. Wade Wilson has been focused on Morena Baccarin's Vanessa for the first two movies, so there wasn't really an appropriate time or place.

Acting often requires actors to get up close and personal with people they barely know, and because of that, uncomfortable situations can arise. Such was the case on the set of Quentin Tarantino's 1997 film Jackie Brown, where star Pam Grier accidentally felt up co-star Samuel L. Jackson. The Foxy Brown actress explained the awkward moment that happened in the scene where Jackie Brown has Ordell Robbie at gunpoint, saying:

See that gun? Well they wouldn't give me the gun while we were rehearsing, they only gave it to me when we did the scene... I had to use my hand to stick between his legs during rehearsal.

For insurance reasons, Pam Grier couldn't use the gun until actually filming the scene, so that necessitated her just using her hand as if she had a gun in it. In the scene, Ordell Robbie gets the tables turned on him and Jackie Brown, as the former puts it, has "a gun pressed up against my dick." To rehearse the placement of said gun and its proximity to Samuel L. Jackson's nether regions, Pam Grier had to put her hand between his legs and, well, she accidentally felt him up.

Pam Grier also explained to PeopleTV's Couchsurfing what happened when she accidentally felt up her co-star, saying:

I said, 'Sam, I'm sorry. Wow, I didn't know they were way down there. Okay, so thank you giving me that. I can't wait to use the gun. I won't miss.'

As if the situation wasn't awkward enough to begin with, Pam Grier's hilarious apology and 'thank you,' accompanied by a comment about the location about Samuel L. Jackson's private area, had to make the situation even more uncomfortable. This seemingly made Pam Grier eager to use the gun and film the actual scene, confident that she wouldn't miss the mark next time.

The actress also told Couchsurfing that Samuel L. Jackson's response to his co-star and '70s sex symbol Pam Grier's hand being in a place he didn't expect it to be was 'oh,' which seems appropriate. Although I would have liked the story to have included Samuel L. Jackson spouting a Samuel L. Jackson-ism in response to this situation, like "Hold on to your butts" or "This party's over" or something about the path of the righteous man.

Watching the scene itself, you can see how Pam Grier's aim may have been a little off, especially if they were rehearsing the scene in the dark. Even if they weren't, her character is looking at Samuel L. Jackson's when she threatens him, so she sort of just had to make an educated guess where to put her hand.

Jackie Brown is arguably the forgotten Quentin Tarantino film, but it is probably worth revisiting, if just for the cast alone. Speaking of incredible casts, Quentin Tarantino's upcoming ninth film boasts arguably the auteur's most impressive yet. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood opens in theaters on July 26, 2019.

We Have A Radical Idea For Sony's Spider-Man Movie Universe

Sony is working on a group of connected films based on Spider-Man characters, beginning with Venom later this fall. The idea wasn't met with much enthusiasm, and things only got stranger with the announcement that an animated movie was in the works. Revealed later to be called Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Sony was keeping details on the animated feature close to its chest, only confirming that the movie would film the popular Miles Morales version of the character's origin story. While three different Spider-Man franchises happening at the same time seems excessive, fans seemed more open to seeing Miles on the big screen as more details began pouring out. Everything came to a head with the release of the official trailer earlier this month, which went on to become one of Sony's biggest viral hits. The fans have spoken, it seems, and if you are asking this writer, it's a much better idea for Sony to throw all their Spider-Man chips into their animated projects than the live-action ones.

To be fair, it's too early to really say that the live-action movies (Venom, etc.) won't be as successful as Into the Spider-Verse. We've only seen trailers so far, and just because a trailer is good or bad doesn't mean the final film will be as well. However, I think that the online reactions and conversations about Into the Spider-Verse compared to Venom says a lot about what people are really interested in and Sony might want to consider listening.

First of all, Into the Spider-Verse is brimming with talent. The movie comes from the minds of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, though only Lord wrote the screenplay. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman are splitting directing duties, while Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Liev Schreiber, and Brian Tyree Henry fill out the extremely solid voice cast.

Not only does the movie have great creative talent, but they have clearly put in a ton of effort into making this movie. The animation is nothing short of beautiful and looks like no other animated movie out there. It looks as if a comic book actually came to life with everything from the bright colors to the thought bubbles appearing right there on the big screen. Into the Spider-Verse has way more going for it visually than one would have imagined and it feels like this was more than just a cash grab. We need way more movies like this that push animation creatively than we do something of a more standard fare.

In this case, the comparison to Venom is like night and day. The first teaser for Venom was not that great, and made it look like it was copy and pasted from literally any other B-movie about a gritty vigilante. The second trailer addressed that somewhat by showing off an awesome looking Venom. However, pretty much all the positive conversation revolves around how the character looks (and how much people want to bang him) and not about the actual quality of the movie.

While not a metric for success, the movies received different reactions based on trailer views. Into the Spider-Verse clocked 44 million views in just 24 hours, making it one of Sony's biggest viral hits. Venom, on the other hand. saw a more modest reaction and it's the latest trailer currently sits with 66 million views. It's clear the Into the Spider-Verse had a bit more positive buzz going for it, and while that's no promise of how it will be received in theaters, it may be earlier indication that Sony has a hit on its hands.

It also doesn't help much that it's unclear if the live-action movies can use Spider-Man, you know, that guy who makes all of these other characters work. Venom is one thing but movies about Black Cat, Silver Sable, and Morbius the Living Vampire don't exactly do much to get me licking my chops. I would rather see these characters in a movie with Spider-Man than just by themselves. Meanwhile, Into the Spider-Verse has absolutely no problem showing Spider-Man front and center. By making him a mentor figure, the film is doing something that moviegoers haven't seen before, making this take on Spidey feel fresher.

Plus, average audience members can easily accept two different Spider-Man universes if one of them is animated. The entirely different formats make it easier to tell that the two series have no relation to each other. If Spidey were to show up in Venom, people would just be confused if whether that was Tom Holland or not -- nevermind how the actually MCU fits into all this.

For what it's worth, Sony has already removed Silver and Black, the next film after Venom, from its release date. This was supposed to give the movie more time to nail down a script, but the fact that this is proving to be challenging is perhaps a sign that Sony is having a tough time nailing the formula. They've got a perfectly good animated movie sitting right in their laps with a built-in premise for future franchises. The multiverse concept allows them to introduce multiple different versions of the same character, creating exciting and fresh new takes. Hell, they could even have Venom show up if they wanted.

Yesterday we got our first official look at Joaquin Phoenix in character for Todd Phillip's upcoming standalone Joker film. Because Joker is an origin story, we will see the character's transformation from a (presumably) regular person into the Clown Prince of Crime. This first image shows the man before that transformation, a man named Arthur Fleck. On its face, that name doesn't mean much, but filmmaker and noted Batman fan, Kevin Smith has spotted a funny connection between Joaquin Phoenix's Joker and the actor who plays the Joker's nemesis in the DCEU, Ben Affleck. Take a look:

That's pretty funny. It's almost too coincidental. What is his middle name, 'Martha?' Maybe Joker writer-director Todd Phillips and screenwriter Scott Silver are just trolling everyone, using the name of Joaquin Phoenix's failed comedian to deliver some meta-humor referencing the character's greatest foe in WB's separate DCEU films. Although, if Batman and the Joker really are two sides of the same coin, it would make sense that we see them reflected in each other in different ways, even if this film takes place in a separate universe. Of course, this is all probably just coincidence and the name Arthur Fleck was chosen for other reasons that have more to do with the character Joaquin Phoenix is playing before he sheds that moniker and becomes the Joker. But this coincidence will bring a deluge of 'Sad Affleck' memes nonetheless.

With Joker being divorced from the DCEU, this film will presumably have a lot of freedom to do things differently and put a spin on the character we haven't seen before, as well as inserting little connections and Easter eggs like this (even if this wasn't intentional). It's funny that Kevin Smith picked up on this, considering that he is a huge comic book fan who has collaborated with Ben Affleck multiple times in the past and is a defender of his Batman portrayal. Speaking of that portrayal, Ben Affleck is still Batman at the moment, but it remains to be seen if that holds true in Matt Reeves' Batman film. With the DCEU coming apart at the seams, maybe he could just hop in to Joker to give the actor one more opportunity with the character.

That said, much of Joker is still a mystery. Beyond the broad strokes of Arthur Fleck being a failed comedian living in New York City, we don't really know much about the film. And although I think everyone is expecting to see Arthur Fleck fully transform into a bleached skinned, green haired villain, we don't know if the story will show him coming in to contact with who will be his eternal enemy, Batman.

Joker is directed by Todd Phillips and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Marc Maron, Frances Conroy, Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz. Joker is now filming and is scheduled to open in theaters on October 4, 2019.
