Boyz N The Hood Director John Singleton Is Dead At 51

After suffering a stroke while in the hospital, writer and director John Singleton was put on life support and had been in the ICU. Now, after he was taken off life support, it is being reported that John Singleton has died at the age of 51.

In the middle of April, news broke that John Singleton had suffered a major stroke, and his family said that he was receiving great medical care. Although the full seriousness of his condition was not immediately apparent, the filmmaker had been in the ICU at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles ever since.

On Monday, in a statement to Deadline, a spokesperson for John Singletons family announced the difficult decision to take him off of life support. The statement read in part:

It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved son, father and friend, John Daniel Singleton will be taken off of life support today. This was an agonizing decision, one that our family made, over a number of days, with the careful counsel of Johns doctors.

The writer and director had long struggled with hypertension (high blood pressure), and in the statement, his family also urged everyone to watch for and recognize the symptoms of this condition by consulting Heart.org. The family also thanked everyone who showed their love and offered their prayers for John Singleton during this time.

Born on January 6, 1968 in South Central Los Angeles, John Singleton had a love for film from an early age. A graduate of USCs storied School of Cinematic Arts, John Singleton broke out in Hollywood in 1991 with his first feature film, Boyz N the Hood. That urban drama, which was shot in South Central Los Angeles where Singleton grew up, netted the writer and director major acclaim, launching his career.

For his debut film, John Singleton was nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards, making him the first African-American nominated for the award and the youngest nominee ever at just 24 years of age. Boyz N the Hood also earned John Singleton an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

John Singleton continued to make a name for himself with dramas like Poetic Justice, which starred the late Tupac Shakur, as well as Higher Learning and Rosewood. He also put his stamp on one of cinemas biggest franchises with 2 Fast 2 Furious, teaming up again with Tyrese Gibson following their time together on Baby Boy.

Other notable titles in John Singletons filmography are 2000s Shaft, starring Samuel L. Jackson, and the crime drama Four Brothers. In recent years, John Singleton has directed several one-off episodes of popular TV shows like Empire, American Crime Story and Billions. In addition to those directorial efforts, John Singleton co-created and executive produced the FX drama series Snowfall, which is expected to premiere its third season later this year.

John Singleton was a trailblazer who helped kick open doors for African-American filmmakers that were long closed (Spike Lee was snubbed for a Best Director nom for Do the Right Thing two year prior to Singletons nomination). He brought the kinds of stories that many audiences were unfamiliar with to life in a way that was raw and entertaining and that cemented his place in cinematic history.

John Singleton loved film, sailing and his family. He is survived by his mother and father and his seven children.

Zack Snyder Is Screening His Director's Cuts In A Three-Day Event

Directors cuts are an interesting thing. Often serving as incentive for audiences to revisit a movie on home video, they usually dont provide a ton extra beyond the theatrical cut or drastically alter the effect of a film. That cannot be said for the films of Zack Snyder, whose directors cuts are often much longer and can change how the film is viewed. For fans of his work, Zack Snyder will soon be screening some of his directors cuts in a three-day event.

The ArtCenter in Pasadena, California will be hosting Zack Snyder: The Directors Cuts, a three-day event that will feature special screenings of the directors cuts of Dawn of the Dead, Watchmen and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - The Ultimate Edition. The films will be screened on March 22, 23 and 24, respectively, and each screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Zack Snyder himself, special guests from the films cast and crew, and ArtCenter alumnus.

Those wishing to attend the event can purchase three-day passes or single-day tickets through the ArtCenter website, all of which include snacks and beverages in the ticket price.

This is an exciting proposition for film fans and Zack Snyder fans specifically to watch the directors films in the way that he intended them, unconstrained by rating or multiplex-friendly runtimes. With Zack Snyder there to discuss the films with the audience, it should give attendees greater insight into his goals with each film and his methodology in making them.

However, many of you have probably already noted to yourself that this event has one glaring omission, perhaps the most talked about directors cut in film history and certainly in recent memory, the so-called Snyder Cut of Justice League. Alas, that much-requested look at Zack Snyders uncompromised vision of what that 2017 film was going to be before Snyder left and Joss Whedon came on to retool the movie will remain unseen, at least at this event.

That said, this three-day event will have post-screening Q&As and people are almost definitely going to ask him about Justice League. Personally, I wouldnt be surprised if those attending the Dawn of the Dead or Watchmen screenings jumped ahead to the Justice League questions. Especially in the post-Batman v Superman Q&A, there are bound to be questions about how Zack Snyder would have followed-up that film and about his supposed 5-film arc that began with Man of Steel.

There are no guarantees, of course, and Zack Snyder may want to avoid having to talk too much about that subject, but perhaps he will share some thoughts on it that we havent heard before that paint a more complete picture of what might have been had Justice League and the DCEU remained under his stewardship.

It will also be interesting to hear him discuss Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, for which the Ultimate Edition directors cut is considered by some to be far superior to the theatrical version. Its also notable that the Watchmen version being screened looks like it will be the directors cut and not the Ultimate Cut, which incorporates even more of that legendary graphic novels content. Maybe Snyder will even give attendees his thoughts on HBO doing a Watchmen TV series.

Next up for Zack Snyder in his first film since Justice League, is Army of the Dead, a new zombie movie for Netflix.
