Walt Disney World's Guardians Of The Galaxy Ride Will Be A New Type Of Roller Coaster

Fans of the MCU and fans of Walt Disney World were equally excited when it was announced that Epcot would be receiving a brand new Guardians of the Galaxy themed roller coaster in time for the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World. However, this morning, Bob Chapek, The Walt Disney Company's Chairman of Parks, Experiences and Consumer Products revealed that the new attraction will be a first of its kind experience, what Disney Parks is calling a "storytelling coaster." On most coasters, the vehicles point straight ahead throughout the ride, but on this attraction, each individual cab will be programmed to direct your eye to the story happening around you. That means instead of whizzing by the action, you'll be fully immersed in the story from the minute you launch.

Some test footage of the new attraction, which Bob Chopek showed at the IAAPA Attractions Expo (via Attractions Magazine), showed a chain of traditional rollercoaster vehicles, where one was moving left and right as it got pulled forward at high speed. While the test footage didn't give any indication of what will be surrounding the ride vehicles on the actual Guardians of the Galaxy attraction, one assumes the car will be pointing at screens or animatronics that will tell the story that the ride has created.

Roller coaster cars that move aren't entirely new, many coasters give riders the ability to spin around in some way independent of the forward motion, but this may be the first coaster that will move you around in a programmed way specifically to show you something.

Storytelling and immersion have always been a major part of what Disney tries to do in order to elevate the attractions beyond simple rides. Many of Disney's competitors have followed suit over the years. We're used to getting interesting and involved stories on exciting thrill rides like Star Tours or the Indiana Jones Adventure, but those rides don't move at the speed of a rollercoaster.

Conversely, many roller coasters do have stories that are part of them, but traditionally all the storytelling is done in pre-show rooms and ride cues and the story part of the ride itself is negligible at best. Disney's Hollywood Studios' Rock N' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith or the newly skinned Incredicoaster would be examples of that. They might have elements of the story or theme around you as your car goes flying by, but it's little more than set dressing.

Of course, the reason that we don't get a lot of deeply engaging stories on roller coasters is that it's just difficult to explain a lot while traveling at 45 miles per hour for two minutes at a time. How do you get across the information that you want to get across when the guest can only see what you want to show them for a brief moment?

Clearly, the ride vehicles ability to direct the guests attention to where the information is happening is part of the way this will work, but it's probably only part of the story. The rest of the answer may be found in the fact that the show building is one of the largest constructions of its kind that Walt Disney World has ever created. Bob Chopek revealed that the concrete foundation was the largest pour Walt Disney World had ever made. To explain the size of the show building itself, he revealed that four Spaceship Earths, the massive Epcot geodesic dome, could fit inside it.

This massive size could help the ride in a couple of different ways. First, if there's a significant amount of distance between the track and the wall of the building, then projections being displayed there can be large, and take up the guests field of view in a broader way, meaning that there will simply be more time to look at whatever it is the ride wants to show you.

Secondly, the massive building could house a significant track length. If the ride is longer than your average roller coaster, then it will have more time to tell you its story. Either of these things, or some combination of the two, could be the way this will all work.

This is already done to some degree at Space Mountain at Disneyland. When the park wants to put an extra emphasis on Star Wars, the ride gets a reskin and a name change to Hyperspace Mountain. The ride vehicle becomes a fighter in an X-wing squadron that gets involved in a battle with a Star Destroyer. Projections of other ships are shown on the walls, lighting effects are added to create the appearance of laser blasts, and radio chatter is heard over the ride vehicle speakers. It's pretty remarkable how immersive it is considering it's just a reskin over an older ride. These new ride vehicles could take all that to another level.

What story the new ride will tell, and even its official name, are still under wraps. We don't even have a real window for when the ride is expected to be completed, beyond the fact that it will be completed in time for Walt Disney World's big 50th birthday party in 2021.

Some of these questions are actually kind of important because the state of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise itself is a big question mark right now. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was expected to be in theaters in 2020 but after Disney made the decision to fire James Gunn the movie is on indefinite hold. While the ride was expected to come after the third film, it now is very likely to arrive first. This could potentially require a change in the ride's story.

Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout at Disney California Adventure uses the actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and while the ride's story isn't officially MCU canon, assuming the new ride was going to do the same, there may be a hiccup if the ride was going to use a character that the films had not yet introduced. There's also the problem that the word on the street was that filming the segments for the ride was rumored to be happening alongside filming of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and if that can't happen, it will be significantly more expensive and time consuming to complete this attraction.

Everything about the Guardians of the Galaxy attraction sounds pretty cool so far. I'll certainly be looking forward to checking it out sometime in 2021.

Is Avengers: Endgame Opening Early In China?

Audiences are a month away from Avengers: Endgame, and anticipation has reached a fever pitch. With Captain Marvel in the rear view, all eyes are on what The Russo Brothers will bring to the table when Endgame finally arrives in theaters, and catches us up on the world after Thanos' finger snap of death. Luckily, some brief trailers and epic posters have been provided to help satiate the hunger of the rabid fanbase.

After a series of character posters were released (and revealed the fate of certain characters), the next bit of marketing material to drop was the poster for Endgame's Chinese release. Aside from how epic the poster was and its inclusion of the dusted characters, there's one thing that fans noticed: an earlier release date. You can check out the poster below, which indicates the blockbuster will arrive in theaters on April 24th, two days before its set to arrive in the US.

Does anyone else have chills? This poster is an epic way to represent the full cast of Infinity War and Endgame, while also highlighting the focus on the surviving heroes. After all, they'll have to unite in order to fight Thanos and hopefully reverse the affects of The Decimation. But that release date is new, which may indicate that international audiences will get access to the Marvel blockbuster before domestic moviegoers.

The Chinese poster for Avengers: Endgame arrived on the internet today, and quickly became viral on social media. While fans' first reaction was to enjoy the epic visuals of the art and the inclusion of new characters, the truth bomb about the film's release date had fans in the US going through some serious FOMO. After all, two days is just too long to wait for the epic conclusion of Marvel's Phase Three.

Alas, cinephiles in the states will just have to grin and bear it, as Endgame is set to arrive in just a month's time. Until then, fans will have to continue debating and theorizing what might come when The Russos final Marvel blockbuster is finally here. And this poster might tease some new developments, as supporting characters from various franchises pop up that are new.

Marvel fans will immediately spot Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, who made her debut in Thor: Ragnarok. Valkyrie made a serious splash in her first appearance, but was noticeably absent from Avengers: Infinity War. And considering that the blockbuster opened on the Asgardian ship, her absence was suspect But Val finally popped up in the new character posters, confirming she survived The Snap. And now it looks like she'll have a role in the upcoming battle against Thanos.

Doctor Strange's Wong is also in this new poster, after also being left out of the first round of marketing material. Wong managed to make out Infinity War without turning to dust, and it likely guarding the Sanctum Sanctorum. And with Doctor Strange no longer with us, Wong's role in the mystical world of the MCU may be all the more important.

Despite being mostly blacked out, the fallen heroes are arguably the star of the new Avengers: Endgame poster. The upcoming blockbuster is focused on the heroes who made it out of Infinity War alive, but the dusted characters are still very much apart of the film's blood. The latest trailer for Endgame paid tribute to the dusted characters, and the countless fatalities that Thanos took throughout the course of his mission for galaxy-wide genocide.

The dusted characters' silhouettes are shown at the bottom of the poster, including characters who weren't featured much throughout the course of Infinity War. For instance, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is center stage, even though he didn't pop up until his iconic mid-credits scene. Joining him in the front row are Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Star-Lord, and Vision.

The second row features more dusting characters, and the far left of the poster features Letitia Wright's Shuri. Shuri made her debut in Black Panther, and quickly became a fan favorite character. She had a tertiary role in Avengers: Infinity War, attempting to free Vision's consciousness from the Mind Stone. She eventually took arms against Corvus Glaive, but Thanos' child remained completely focused on the android. Seeing her use her signature gauntlets was the last time Shuri was seen onscreen, and her fate was left unclear in the wake of Thanos' snap. But it was sadly revealed last week that Shuri also faded to dust, putting Wakanda's future in more jeopardy.

From looking at the dusted characters in a row, it's highlighted just how hard the Guardians of the Galaxy were hit by Thanos' assault. In the end of Avengers: Infinity War, only Rocket and Nebula were left alive. Gamora was killed by her adopted father in the movie's second act, so he could acquire the Soul Stone from Red Skull. And when the Mad Titan eventually collected all the Infinity Stones, audiences were left to watch in horror as Mantis, Drax, Star-Lord, and Groot all faded to dust before our eyes. As such, something big is going to need to happen in order for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to go forward.

Of course, most moviegoers assume that the surviving Avengers will find a way to reverse the affects of Thanos' snap. With the OG Avengers coming to the end of their contracts, the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe presumably lies in the new class, including the likes of Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange. But that trio of characters are dust, as are other fan favorites like Falcon, Scarlet Witch, and Bucky. So unless Phase Four will be set in alternate dimension (not out of the question), the dusted characters will need to be revived somehow. But the question is: how?

Could John Connor Actually Be Dead In Terminator: Dark Fate?

John Connor is one of the most integral characters of the Terminator franchise. He didnt show up in the first movie, but its thanks to him that Kyle Reese was sent back in time to protect his mother from a ruthless T-800 and guarantee he would be born. John has appeared in every Terminator movie afterwards, and Terminator: Dark Fate wont be any exception.

We have yet to see John Connor in any of the Terminator: Dark Fate pictures and footage released, but producer and Terminator franchise mastermind James Cameron assured fans last month that the next installment will continue Johns story. That may be, but given the secrecy surrounding Johns role, as well as the fact that Dark Fate is serving as a sequel only to the first two Terminator movies (Rise of the Machines, Salvation and Genisys take place in alternate timelines), I cant help wondering if in this continuity, John is dead, possibly for a long time.

The official plot synopsis for Terminator: Dark Fate says it takes place 27 years after Terminator 2: Judgement Day. That movie was set in 1995, so that places Dark Fate in 2022. Terminator Salvation took place in 2018, so youd think when the Dark Fate casting reports started coming out, we would have heard about an actor around Christian Bales age when he appeared in Salvation being tapped for the role of adult John. That never happened.

Instead, all thats been revealed about John Connor in Terminator: Dark Fate is that Jude Collie will serve as a stand-in for a young John Connor, and CGI will be used to apply Edward Furlongs likeness from Terminator 2: Judgement Day to Collies face. So at some point during Dark Fate, well flash back to either the events of Terminator 2 or what happened shortly after Sarah and John defeated Robert Patricks T-1000 with the first benevolent T-800.

While there is a possibility that John Connor could be keeping a low profile during Terminator: Dark Fate (never make it easy for one of Skynets assassins to find you), all of the presented information, as well as the fact that Gabriel Lunas Rev-9 Terminator is after Natalia Reyes Dani in the movie, leads me to believe that John died after Terminator 2, either at the hands of a Terminator or through a different set of circumstances.

Terminator 2 ended on a more positive note than its predecessor, with Sarah Connor noting that she can finally face the future with hope after seeing that a machine could learn the value of life. If the Terminator saga was simply a duology, then we can imagine that Skynet would never come to power. But, just like what happened in Rise of the Machines, the threat of Skynet was wasnt eliminated, but simply delayed in Dark Fates continuity.

Clearly Skynet hasnt taken over the world in Terminator: Dark Fate yet, but that doesnt mean that there havent been any Terminator incidents in the 27 years between Terminator 2 and Dark Fate. And its possible that the timeline has reached a point where John Connor doesnt need to be alive for the Resistance to successfully wage war against Skynet in the future.

If thats the case, then killing John Connor as a child is definitely a possibility. Needless to say his death would be incredibly painful for Sarah, but because she knows that the threat of the Terminators hasnt been wiped out (knowledge she presumably confirmed from this new, aged T-800 were meeting in Dark Fate), she would keep fighting on to ensure her sons demise wasnt in vain, hence why she arrives to rescue Dani and Grace from the Rev-9.

Taking John Connor off the proverbial playing board would also line up with what James Cameron has said about Terminator: Dark Fate being used to pass the baton to a new generation of characters. This year marks the 35th anniversary of The Terminators release, and assuming Dark Fate is successful, then you can bet Paramount is going to put a sequel or two into development.

While its great to see Linda Hamilton alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger again in a Terminator movie, the fact of the matter is if Paramount want this franchise to go on, its time for a change. Just like how the Star Trek TV shows tarted following new characters and upcoming Star Wars movies will deliver tales unconnected to the Skywalker Saga, new blood is needed for the Terminator franchise.

Terminator: Dark Fate seems to be taking the first steps on this path by having the Rev-9 hunt down Dani Ramos. As far as we know, she doesnt have any connection to John Connor, and if John is already dead, then thats a moot point. It shows that in the timeline Dark Fate is operating in, John isnt the integral piece for the Resistance to stand a chance of defeating Skynet. Dani and perhaps others (like her unborn child) fill that void.

This approach may not appeal to some Terminator fans, but lets be honest, the John Connor well has almost run dry. Genisys tried to spice things up by making him a villain, but considering how that movie was critically received, it didnt work out. It might be time to leave him behind, something that Dark Fate seems to be setting up.

A Private War Trailer Has Rosamund Pike As An Eyepatch-Wearing Badass

Rosamund Pike is generally known for playing the cool blonde in most of her movies. Sometimes sweet, usually headstrong and occasionally bloody-minded and calculating, Pike has already gone a long way toward showing audiences that she's capable of giving us some very different characterizations on screen. Well, now she's going to be showing us yet another side of herself in her new film, A Private War. Pike is taking on the real-life story of American journalist Marie Colvin, and from the looks of the new trailer, she's definitely found herself one badass character this time. Take a look:

As you can see, Marie Colvin wasn't any ordinary reporter. She was obsessed with finding the truth behind many of the world's most dangerous conflicts, and went to war zones in the Middle East, Chechnya, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and East Timor during the 27 years she worked for the British newspaper The Sunday Times. The heart-pounding trailer starts by letting us know that the work Colvin did could get her in trouble, as the governments she reported on were never amused by an outsider coming in and trying to get to the root of the wars they were a part of.

The trailer take us through many of the dangerous war zones that Marie Colvin went to, including the one which led to the loss of her eye, but is also keen to show us that she did have many people on her side as she traversed the globe looking for the truth in very hazardous places. One of those allies was her trusted photographer, Paul Conroy, who's played in the film by Fifty Shades Freed actor Jamie Dornan. The film will follow Colvin and Conroy to one of the most dangerous assignments of their lives, as they cover the war-torn Syrian city of Homs.

The title of the film seems to serve a dual purpose, and Rosamund Pike helps sell each aspect of A Private War equally well. Clearly, Colvin was completely dedicated to exposing the truth behind some of the most dangerous conflicts in the world, and willingly put herself at risk many times because, as Pike says at one point in the trailer, she needed to see it for herself. With that commitment, though, came some self-doubt. This was not about her mission to get to the truth, but about her unfailing desire to go to experience these war zones first hand, and the personal toll it took on her life. So, it seems that Colvin was fighting to get to the truth and also fighting with herself a bit as she continued to put herself in danger to do her job how she felt it needed to be done.

It certainly looks like Rosamund Pike has taken to the task of playing a tough, committed war correspondent with a badass ferocity that will make A Private War, which also stars Stanley Tucci, Tom Hollander, Corey Johnson and Fady Elsayed, an intriguing watch.
