The Classic Super Troopers Jokes Broken Lizard Had To Reference In Super Troopers 2

Almost two decades after the Vermont State Troopers became cult comedy icons in Super Troopers, the Broken Lizard guys are about to get back into the action. Super Troopers 2 will appropriately debut this weekend on April 20, which means the time has come to start looking back on some of the most famous jokes from the original. To help accomplish that goal, CinemaBlend recently sat down with Broken Lizard to talk about some of the gags that they knew they would have to call back to in their latest film. Among the favorites were the "liter of cola," "shenanigans," and The Cat Game. Broken Lizard explained:

Steve Lemme: Liter of cola and the chicanery shenanigans callback had to go.Jay Chandrasekhar: And meow.Erik Stolhanske: We had to do a meow.Paul Soter: It had to be something with meow.

That only scratches the surface of the number of classic jokes from the original Super Troopers, but it's definitely an excellent greatest hits compilation. The 2001 original has become legendary for the sheer number of quotable gags that it produced when it first debuted (particularly in the classic opening traffic stop), and those are some of the ones that get attention in the belated sequel.

Of course, The Cat Game (featuring a cameo by comedian Jim Gaffigan) is a particular fan-favorite element of the original Super Troopers. If you have never seen it (or need a refresher course), then check it out, below.

With all of that said, the intention of these callbacks was never to just retell the same joke from Super Troopers in Super Troopers 2 without making any changes to the material. The second film takes the titular cops to "bust heads on the highway" to a new locale by sending them to a contested part of the border between the United States and Canada, which means the jokes get to take on new lives by focusing on the culture clashes between the countries. The Broken Lizard guys continued in our chat and briefly touched on how they used the sequel to make meta-comments on some of the best Super Troopers jokes. As Kevin Heffernan explained:

Kevin Heffernan: I think with all of them it had to have a little spin on it. You couldn't do the exact same joke. I was glad we found ways to spin, like the meow joke.Paul Soter: The meow bit is kind of meta. The shenanigans equals chicaneries was a funny sort of parallel universe joke. So yeah, each one tried to have some other personality to it.

Super Troopers 3 Might Happen Sooner Than You Think

It took 16 long years for the cult classic Super Troopers to get a sequel, but we finally got it earlier this year with Super Troopers 2. The process to get the sequel to the big screen was not an easy one. It took years of development, a crowdfunding campaign and a hellaciously difficult production schedule to get the film made, so you might think that the Broken Lizard troupe is in no hurry to get started on a third film in the franchise. However, Super Troopers 3 could happen sooner than you might think. The Broken Lizard troupe spoke exclusively with CinemaBlend at Comic Con, revealing that a third film won't take quite as long, saying:

Kevin Heffernan: We're looking to get the third one going. And hopefully it won't take as long as it did to get the second one going.Jay Chandrasekhar: That's right. We're writing.Heffernan: We don't want to be, like, in our 70s when we do it. We gotta get on it.

Super Troopers 2 just came out, but it sounds like the Broken Lizard troupe of Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Erik Stolhanske and Paul Soter are already thinking of ideas for a threequel. This is no doubt very exciting for fans that feared they might never get more from this franchise or that it would take another decade and a half to see it. The cast of Super Troopers 2 also seem motivated to not let a third film go unmade for years on end, acknowledging how long the second one took and that doing Super Troopers 3 in their 70s might not really work.

The other thing that is encouraging is that they aren't just intending to do a third movie in the abstract. Not only is the intent there, but as director Jay Chandrasekhar said, they are in the midst of writing it. So Super Troopers 3 is already a thing that is being thought about and is in the very early stages. Although they may just be bouncing ideas back and forth at this point, that is still the first step towards an eventual third film. Hopefully that means that this time around, we won't have to wait quite as long. It's cool to hear that Broken Lizard intends on making this a trilogy and one that happens sooner rather than later. Super Troopers 2 wasn't some box office blockbuster, but it did exceed projections opening weekend on the way to a $30.6 million domestic haul. That might not sound impressive, but on a $13.5 million dollar budget, perhaps it performed well enough for us to get more highway patrol shenanigans. Super Troopers 2 didn't do especially well review-wise, but audiences seemed to like it and director Jay Chandrasekhar was proud of it. I imagine more audiences will find it on home video, which is what happened with the first film.

Personally I'm still hoping for a Beerfest 2, but if that follows the Super Troopers model of 16 years between the first film and the second, maybe we'll get Super Troopers 3 before a Beerfest sequel in 2022. Jeffrey Dean Morgan Is Still Talking About Playing The Flashpoint Batman

Nobody is quite sure what the long-term plan is for the DC film universe. However, one thing we do know is that a Flashpoint movie is planned at some point. The other thing we know is that Jeffrey Dean Morgan wants in. The actor, who briefly played Thomas Wayne in the opening of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has already said that he would be interested in playing the Batman in a big screen version of the timeline-altering Flashpoint movie, but Morgan wants everybody to understand that this isn't just something he's willing to do, it's something that he wants to do. We'll see. I mean, look, DC is DC and they'll figure out what they're going to do next. But I'm highly aware of the character, I will say that. I'm highly aware of the character, and it would probably be a thrill of a lifetime to put on the Batsuit.

With superhero movies being as popular as they are these days, they're largely more popular than the comics that spawned them. As such, many actors aren't necessarily all that familiar with the history of the characters they're playing unless they do the research. Jeffrey Dean Morgan tells Total Film (via GamesRadar) that he's well versed in the alternate history version of Thomas Wayne, and knows that it means that he could, theoretically, dawn the Batsuit in the upcoming Flashpoint movie.

And Jeffrey Dean Morgan isn't just blowing smoke here. It's clear that he's well versed in the character's history because he was campaigning to play Batman in a Flashpoint movie before it was ever announced there was even going to be a Flashpoint movie. It's been less than a year since Warner Bros. officially added Flashpoint to its list of planned DC comics movies (rather than it simply being a solo Flash movie), and Morgan was already looking toward something like that before that happened. Whether he had inside info on what was being considered or just had a dream to put on the cape and cowl, he was interested. Based on his comment here, it sounds like he just really wants to put on the cowl. Can you blame him?

Flashpoint is a DC comics storyline that sees The Flash travel back in time and save the life of his mother. The resulting ripples through the timeline have several other major impacts on the DC comics heroes. Most notably here, the fact that a mugger kills the son of Thomas Wayne, driving him to become the Batman. He also becomes a more vicious and brutal version of the character, something that Jeffrey Dean Morgan seems specifically interested in playing.

And what I know about the Flashpoint Batman is, you know, for me, I think he is not only the darkest of the Batmen, but the coolest. And I love his whole storyline and who he is and the tortured soul of it all.

While we have no idea when we'll see the Flashpoint movie, there are certainly worse things it could do than have a larger role for Jeffrey Dean Morgan. He clearly is good at playing brutal characters and it seems a shame to use him in such a small way in the current DC expanded universe.

With the summer months in the rear view, the time has come to look forward to fall movies. This includes projects specifically for the season, like Blumhouse's upcoming Halloween. The canon-defying sequel will see the return of OG scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis, who is returning to play a hardened and battle ready Laurie Strode. Although John Carpenter returned to write the new movie's music, Halloween is being handled by a new team of superfans, including David Gordon Green and Danny McBride. The latter is serving as a writer, joining his favorite franchise of all time. But despite loving the original Halloween so much, he was too freaked to come face to face with villain Michael Myers. As he tells it,

That day, they were testing the mask [with] James for the very first time. They weren't even shooting with him. They had brought the mask onto set and were doing lighting tests inside the house. We creeped in early to see that... and there he was at the end of the hallway, just sort of lit from a little bit of light coming in from a bedroom shining on the Shape standing at the end of this hallway, just looking at us. We were all like, 'That's incredible! I don't want to go back there. I know what happens when you go back there!'

Smart man. Michael Myers has a habit of isolating and murdering his victims, so Danny McBride knew better than to get alone with The Shape. If only Laurie Strode's friends had the same idea back in the original movie.

Danny McBride's comments to EW continues to highlight what a superfan the Vice Principals actor is to the Halloween franchise. In many ways, John Carpenter's 1978 movie helped to shape the slasher genre, and inspired countless horror movies in the decades since. Halloween's music, characters, and cinematography have all remained iconic, including the horrifying ways in which Michael Myers stalks his victims.

As Halloween was filming, Danny McBride and the rest of the team continued highlighting how much they were trying to emulate the original. The franchise's complicated canon was quickly scrapped, making Blumhouse's new movie a direct sequel to John Carpenter's classic. The upcoming movie will reportedly rely heavily on tension, rather than gore. The first footage certainly proves this, portraying Michael Myers as an agent of chaos, who both kills and spares residents of Haddonfield at random. But there's one victim he's got his damaged eye on: Laurie Strode.

The anticipation for Halloween has only grown since the project was first announced, and the early reception for the movie has been very high.
