Some Marvel Fans Are Hoping Taika Waititi Will Replace James Gunn For Guardians 3

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on a serious roll lately, as every single installment in Phase Three has been a critical and financial success. And while this success will likely continue through Captain Marvel and Avengers 4, the shared universe recently lost one of its most visionary contributors. Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn was recently fired by Disney and Marvel Studios, after insensitive Tweets resurfaced that forced the House of Mouse to distance itself from Gunn. This leaves the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise a mystery, as Gunn was intimately involved in every aspect of the intergalactic blockbusters. But some Marvel fans know who should replace him: Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi.

When James Gunn was shockingly fired from his position in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the internet basically exploded. It's almost impossible to think of anyone else directing the motley crew of Guardians, especially with the threequel set to be one of the first new movies in Phase Four. A new director is needed, and given Taika Waititi's massive success with Ragnarok, many fans believed he could be the perfect choice. Check out one of said tweets below.

While far from an official petition, you can tell that the Marvel fandom is eager for answers regarding the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The property is one of the most beloved in the greater MCU, and now it seems like a threequel is no longer guaranteed. But Taika Waititi might be the guy to change this.

Taika Waititi made his MCU debut directing Thor: Ragnarok, which has been universally considered the strongest installment in Chris Hemsworth's franchise. Waititi took the God of Thunder out of Asgard and far into the galaxy, allowing him to meet up with The Hulk and newcomers like Valkyrie. Waititi inserted his unique sense of humor into Ragnarok, adding more levity and comedy than the previous two. And since Waititi has already ventured into the cosmic side of the MCU, he'd likely be able to balance the motley crew of Guardians and direct Vol. 3.

Fans have been hoping that Taika Waititi would return to the MCU since Thor: Ragnarok debuted in theaters and shattered expectations about the franchise. Since then, many have hoped that Chris Hemsworth would continue his tenure as Thor, therefore allowing Waititi to possibly direct a fourth film. And with James Gunn unable to complete his planned trilogy, it might be the opportunity to bring Waititi back to the MCU without having to pay Hemsworth an extra boat load of money.

But Taika Waititi isn't the only Marvel figure fans can envision directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Some fans have suggested actress Karen Gillan (aka Nebula) would be a good choice, given her itch for directing and experience playing Nebula. Another option given over Twitter is Nicole Perlman, who helped write the first Guardians movie.

Given Nicole Perlman's experience with the original Guardians of the Galaxy movie, she's another possible choice to succeed James Gunn as director. She's also still involved with Marvel, writing Captain Marvel and doing the treatment for the still developing Black Widow movie. Overall, it's unclear how Guardians of the Galaxy will continue without James Gunn. But with the titular group of weirdos also having roles in Infinity War and Avengers 4, fans are going to want more from the property.

Elizabeth Banks Reveals Her Charlie's Angels Reboot Pitch

The Charlies Angels franchise returns to the big screen this year with a brand new film starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska and Elizabeth Banks. Elizabeth Banks isnt just acting this time around though; she is also one of the films credited screenwriters, and this will mark her second time directing a film. Elizabeth Banks is also producing the new Charlies Angels through her Brownstone Productions and she brought a specific pitch in mind for the reboot, as she explained:

I thought you could expand the world beyond three women on the beach in California and relaunch it as a global spy franchise. I thought about [the detective agency's faceless boss] Charles Townsend as the basis of it, and the '70s, which is when I was born, and the women's movement over the past 40 years. And I thought about what a really wealthy man who was a benefactor to these women in the '70s would have grown that organization into over 40 years.

The previous Charlies Angels films and TV shows have primarily focused on a trio of women, Charlies titular Angels, working for the Townsend Agency, a crime-fighting detective agency. The new film will also center on a trio, but for her pitch, Elizabeth Banks took that concept and blew it up, reimagining the Townsend Agency as a global enterprise, with spies, Angels and Bosleys all around the world. Thus the film can also act as a sequel and not a total reboot.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Elizabeth Banks mentioned the womens movement over the past several decades and how if the wealthy and mysterious Charles Townsend had this agency in the '70s and was supporting these women back then, what would his next steps have been. The thought being that Charlie would have wanted to expand the success of the agency beyond just three women in California, and over the decades it would have grown into a global spy organization.

So Elizabeth Banks pitch for Charlies Angels expanded out the world of the story to give it a different feel and dynamic from the previous iterations. But she also wanted to update the property for modern times and create a film that felt more true to life for women in the world today. Explaining her approach, she continued:

I went back to the original idea in Charlie's Angels, which was that women were in the workforce. And all of the things that I feel are happening in the women's movement right now, whether it be #MeToo, or I say this in a time of dire straits for women's rights in this country right now but I feel like all those things are happening because women are in the workforce in greater numbers than ever in human history. I just wanted to make a movie about women at work, working together. I wanted to make a movie that was not about their boyfriends that they didn't see enough, or the cats they didn't feed, or the mother that they didn't call, because I don't worry about those things in my daily life. And so, in that way, I felt like we were updating the idea of Charlie's Angels.

With the increase in women in the workforce over the decades, 47.3% labor participation in 1976 when Charlies Angels premiered, versus 56.8% in 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Elizabeth Banks wanted to make a movie about women doing their jobs and working together. Those jobs just happen to be for a spy agency fighting international crime.

Its also pretty clear that Elizabeth Banks didnt want to make a movie that failed the Bechdel Test or one that used the same tired stereotypes for female characters. So dont expect Kristen Stewart or Naomi Scotts characters to be lamenting about boy trouble or their relationships with their mothers while they thwart evil. Its encouraging to hear because those clichd things can bore an audience that has seen them countless times if not done exceptionally well.

Instead, the focus in Charlies Angels will be on the Angels working together and their relationships with one another.

Spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is an ever expanding place, but the shared universe is in a precarious position. The shocking and harrowing events of Avengers: Infinity War changed the MCU as we know it, and it's unclear exactly how the Avengers and Guardians will recover from their innumerable losses. Still, the MCU keeps trucking along, with the Ant-Man and The Wasp arriving in theaters this weekend. Paul Rudd's Scott Lang is getting his second film, with Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne become a full fledged superhero in the process. Anticipation for Peyton Reed's upcoming sequel has been steadily increasing, and now it looks like Ant-Man 2 is going to make a goliath amount of money at the box office this weekend.

The latest estimates for Ant-Man and the Wasp's opening weekend are in, putting the upcoming blockbuster at $80 million for its opening weekend. While not exactly Avengers sized numbers, this prediction proved that Paul Rudd's pint sized hero has staying power in the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe. And with the franchise's OG heroes coming to the end of their contracts, Ant-Man and The Wasp is needed to fill out the ranks, and hopefully help save Thanos' victims in the process.

Despite focusing on a lesser known hero and having a potentially devastating director shakeup, Ant-Man managed to deliver a quirky and light hearted adventure in 2015, thanks to Peyton Reed. Reed has returned to the director's seat for Ant-Man and The Wasp, able to have more control over characters like Scott, Hope, Hank, and Luis in the process.

Ant-Man and The Wasp's impressive box office prediction is likely aided by the events of Avengers: Infinity War, which Ant-Man was noticeably absent for. Thanos was able to wipe out half the galaxy with the snap of a finger, so fans are eager to see how Marvel continues the narrative for the two films in between Infinity War and Avengers 4. While Ant-Man and The Wasp has been teased as a capsulated and independent story, its post-credits scenes will reportedly have a direct connection to the MCU proper, and the struggle against Thanos.

It should be interesting to see if The Wrap's new estimations for Ant-Man and The Wasp's end up being accurate, or if the upcoming sequel continues to shatter expectations. It was previously reported to take in $75 million, and estimates are only continuing to grow. But Ant-Man and The Wasp also has the potential to break Marvel's five-film winning streak of $100 million openers. So while $80M is still far more than the original Ant-Man made back in 2015 ($57.2 million), the studio is no doubt hoping that word of mouth and the holiday weekend will help it make even more cash.
