The DC live-action universe has had a fascinating run in theaters, full of peaks and valleys. While Warner Bros. is currently surfing on Aquaman'_s success and gearing up for the highly anticipated release of _Shazam!, there was a time when thinks appeared a bit more bleak. It all started with Zack Snyder's initial installments, which did a ton world-building and introduced beloved characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had a ton of hype ahead of its release, as fans were eager to see the DC trinity adapted into live-action. Expectations were sky high, as were fan theories regarding what the blockbuster might contain. One of the most popular theories was that Jena Malone was actually playing Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. Her scenes were left on the cutting room floor of the theatrical release, and now Zack Snyder has responded to those Batgirl rumors, saying:
It's hard because I talk about those things with Debbie. 'Hey so I saw this thing and they think Jena Malone is Barbara Gordon'... When people are mad I don't care because they'll find out eventually. When they're hyped and it's wrong it's harder.
Zack Snyder spent a number of years working on the DCEU, starting with Man of Steel. As such, he also spent years sidestepping certain questions, fan theories, and potential controversies. And considering the secretive nature of the superhero genre, he was unable to set the record straight when it came to Batman v Superman reports.
Zack Snyder's comments (via Twitter) come from his recent screening of Batman v Superman's director's cut. A Q&A accompanied the screening, and the director/writer was finally able to address those rumors about Jena Malone playing Batgirl. Malone's role was unnamed and mysterious until BvS arrived in theaters, so the fandom spent months debating who the Sucker Punch actress might be playing. With so many characters being introduced in the blockbuster, it didn't seem out of question that Barbara Gordon might be incorporated.
In the end, Jena Malone played Jenet Klyburn, a scientist who worked at S.T.A.R. labs, and was working to help Lois Lane track analyze the bullets from her conflict in Nairomi. It's a bit part that can be seen in the director's cut of Batman v Superman, although it got cut from the theatrical release. And to date, Batgirl still hasn't been adapted into live-action for the cinematic universe.
Batgirl was set to get a movie of her own, with Joss Whedon behind the camera. But he ultimately dropped the project after failing to lock down a story. And following the release of Justice League, it appears that Whedon has distanced himself from the DC universe as a whole.
The next DC release is Shazam! on April 5, 2019, and Zack Snyder's next project will be Army of The Dead for Netflix. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Beast Mode: How James McAvoy Got Insanely Jacked For Glass
James McAvoy is going BIG with Glass. He didn't have time to get too muscled-up before filming Split, but now that The Beast is back in Glass, the 39-year-old Scottish actor turned to a professional for help.
Cue celebrity trainer Magnus Lygdback, who was tasked with taking James McAvoy's Beast to the next level for the sequel. As the trainer put it...
Obviously he was brilliant in Split, but I don't think his physique was where it could have been, and I think everyone recognized that within the team. That's why they called me.
British GQ asked Magnus Lygdback if The Beast was meant to look unnaturally pumped, and the trainer confirmed that was the goal -- and he thinks they pulled it off.
We had a lot of work to do. The Beast is supposed to be able to flex his veins and muscles and have a freaky look. It was about building as much mass as possible in a short time. I like to start the day with working out, because that's when you have the most energy. We had a program with which you go really hard on a couple of muscle groups at a time and then let them rest. So we would do legs one day, back and outside shoulders the second day, the third day the chest, front shoulders and core, and the fourth day, arms. That allows the muscles to recover before you work them again and also means you can do more sets, more reps on each muscle.
James McAvoy is not a naturally big guy, so it really must've taken a lot of hard work to get where they wanted him to be. In terms of food, McAvoy had a lot to eat, but they counted "macros" instead of calories. As Magnus Lygdback explained:
I've never counted calories, because you can eat a bag of crisps and get 1,000 calories or eat a chicken breast and get 1,000 calories. It's about the quality, the proportion of the macros: fat and carbs are the energy source and protein is the building stone of the muscles and tissue.
He suggests the macro plan for everyone. But the exercise routine, with a trainer around to keep you in line? Probably not practical for everyone, but that's part of the job for a Hollywood star, depending on the role.
James McAvoy was phenomenal in Split, and probably deserved some awards attention, in my humble opinion. He has a chance to impress both physically and with his range in Glass, the combined sequel to both Unbreakable and Split.
Kevin Wendell Crumb and his many personalities are returning, alongside Bruce Willis' Unbreakable hero David Dunn (now also called The Overseer) and Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price/Mr. Glass.
Writer/director M. Night Shyamalan has warned that the trailers for Glass aren't telling the real story for the movie, which is an exciting tease. He also warned/promised that Glass won't recap the previous two films, allowing the movie to stand on its own for anyone who happens to wander into the theater without having seen Unbreakable or Split. (Let us know if anyone is planning to do that; it would be fascinating to hear their experience.)
At this point, though, fans expect major twists in Night's movies, and there's a fear of building it up too much, or getting fans already thinking of twists so that inevitably they see them coming in the theater. We'll have to see if that's the case, and if it harms the viewing experience at all. Certainly, the big Split twist was a shock to many viewers. And this is the guy who gave us the ultimate twist ending with The Sixth Sense.
Since this story is already combining two successful Night films, I'm not worried that I'll be as disappointed as I was with The Happening. Some lucky fans will be able to watch Glass in advance, and while I envy them, it makes me anxious about spoilers floating around the web. Be careful out there.

Just like Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers 4 is going to have a stacked cast. That said, the majority of the faces will be familiar, as most of Infinity War's players will be back, and recognizable characters like Captain Marvel, Happy Hogan and Hope van Dyne are also confirmed to appear. As far as brand new characters go, word has come in that 13 Reasons Why star Katherine Langford has been added to the proceedings.
This casting update comes courtesy of The Wrap, although the outlet noted that details about Katherine Langford's Avengers 4 character are being kept secret. Given how hush-hush Marvel has been about the movie (the same way it handled Avengers: Infinity War for a long time), this is hardly surprising.
Katherine Langford is best known for her Golden Globe-nominated performance as Hannah Baker on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, which aired its second season back in May. Although that show will be back for Season 3, Langford has hopped to a new Netflix gig, next year's Arthurian-like drama series Cursed. The actress also appeared in Love, Simon earlier this year.
Katherine Langford is actually only the second actor who hasn't previously appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be announced for Avengers 4. In September 2017, The Wolverine's Hiroyuki Sanada was the first new actor to be revealed, though like Langford, we have no idea who he's playing.
With seven months to go until Avengers 4's release, it's possible that Marvel Studios might reveal who Katherine Langford is playing right before the public sees the movie. Then again, Peter Dinklage was cast in Avengers: Infinity War in January 2017, and we didn't learn that he was playing Eitri, the king of the dwarves on Nidavellir, until the movie was screening. Regardless, with such a large cast, it's hard to say if Langford's character will be an important player or if her role is minor.
For years we had no idea what to expect from Avengers 4, but when Thanos snapped his Infinity Stones-powered fingers and wiped out half of all life in the universe at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, that set the stage for what will be the final Phase 3 movie. Officially, Marvel has been careful not to reveal any Avengers 4 story details, though there's been plenty of unofficial chatter and speculation, from the movie picking up years after Infinity War to the surviving heroes venturing into the Quantum Realm.
Fortunately, it doesn't sound like we'll have to wait much longer to get a peek at Avengers 4. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said the first trailer will premiere before the year is over, and once that's out, we'll finally know what the title is (Avengers: Annihilation is among the popular guesses right now).
