Apparently There's A New Doom Movie Happening

Right now, you can see Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the big screen in Rampage, where his character, Davis Okoye, has to deal with three giant, mutated animals and the sinister company that made them this way. But Rampage isn't the first video game movie on Johnson's resume. 13 years ago, he starred alongside Karl Urban in Doom, based off the long-running first-person shooter series. The Doom movie was not well-received (to put it as lightly as possible), but evidently after more than a decade, Universal Pictures is gearing up for a reboot, according to actress Nina Bergman, who revealed that a new cinematic Doom adventure is on the way in the following tweet:

While the Doom video game series kept chugging along after the original Doom movie's release (with the last main game, a reboot simply titled Doom, being released in 2016), this is the first we've heard about the property returning to the big screen. However, Nina Bergman, whose credits include Assassin X, Lost n' Found and multiple appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, revealed that Universal has apparently given the green light for a new Doom movie, which will film in Bulgaria. Since a director has already been hired, presumably we'll learn who the person overseeing this project is soon. Bergman also told a fan that this Doom movie has a "much better script" than its predecessor.

In case you're not familiar with the Doom video games, the basic premise of the first game and its reboot revolved around an unnamed space marine in the future who is posted on Mars and is forced to fight against hordes of demons from Hell that have been unleashed by the Union Aerospace Corporation. The Doom movie also took place on Mars, but instead of fighting hellish creatures, Dwayne Johnson's Sarge, Karl Urban's Reaper and their fellow soldiers were battling genetically-engineered monstrosities. Doom failed to impress audiences and critics alike (it ranks at 19% on Rotten Tomatoes), and it only made $56 million at the box office, $4 million less than its budget. Video game movies are rarely successful, but this was one of the bigger flops. Even Johnson realizes the movie was bad, though he was called out for expressing that opinion.

Assuming a Doom reboot is on the way, I doubt that Universal is pleased that Nina Bergman broke the big news to her Twitter followers first. Nevertheless, if this new movie can learn from the mistakes made by the last movie (which shouldn't be too difficult), then at bare minimum it could be a fun blockbuster and earn a critical reception closer to the likes of Rampage and the new Tomb Raider.

Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates regarding the development of this new Doom movie. In the meantime, you can learn what else this year has in store theatrically by looking through our 2018 release schedule.

Apparently There's A New Doom Movie Happening As such, even though the movie is being made right now, it won't likely make it to the big screen as its predecessor did. Doom is one of the many gaming franchises to suffer from the video game movie curse, in that its Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson-fronted film from 2005 was a complete disaster.

A new report reveals that the DOOM movie is getting pushed back to Fall of 2019, in an effort to really jazz up the film's VFX.

Now that Justice League is out, Warner Bros. is trying to get the Legion of Doom off the ground, although it won't be a full Legion of Doom movie.

A number of those "bad" movies were quite enjoyable, but that's not the point here. And I didn't think the 2005 Doom movie was that bad. It could've been a lot better, but it wasn't that bad. Believe me, it would be easy to make a Doom movie that was worse than the first one.

Apparently, there won't be a new Duke Nukem game or movie.

Apparently There's A New Doom Movie Happening

I can see Duke Nukem being rebooted in a similar fashion to Shadow Warrior. For instance, you could easily adapt John Carpenter's They Live into a video game with Duke Nukem as the protagonist, but instead of portraying him as just some generic misogynistic action hero who steals jokes and catchphrases, have him be some sort of reluctant protagonist, e.g. a down-on-his-luck porn star or an

So we know that the new Doom will shoot in Bulgaria, it has a "super cool" director and that Nina Bergman has a new record coming out. All useful info. There's no word on a release date for the new Doom movie, but then they haven't even officially announced it is even happening yet, or who will star. Look for it in 2019 at the earliest.
