Green Lantern Corps Might Have A New Director In Mind
With 2011's Green Lantern failing to impress critically and commercially, DC wand Warner Bros have been planning for years to give the Emerald Knight a shot at cinematic redemption through Green Lantern Corps, which was one of the earliest DC Extended Universe movies announced. While at one point it looked like David Goyer, who is co-writing Green Lantern Corps with Justin Rhodes, might also sit in the director's chair, other names have been tossed into the mix since then, and the latest one is Mission: Impossible - Fallout's Christopher McQuarrie.
While Rupert Wyatt of Rise of the Planet of the Apes fame was the last director rumored to be up for directing Green Lantern Corps, he is apparently no longer in contention for the gig. That Hashtag Show is now reporting that Christopher McQuarrie is the current person being eyed to helm Green Lantern Corps. His involvement is far from a done deal, but supposedly there will be some movement on this project "very soon."
Christopher McQuarrie is certainly no stranger to blockbuster filmmaking, with his directing credits including The Way of the Gun, Jack Reacher and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. His action sensibilities could be just the thing to ensure that Green Lantern Corps is not only exciting, but feels significantly different from the Ryan Reynolds-led Green Lantern movie. McQuarrie's next directorial endeavor, Mission: Impossible - Fallout (which he also wrote), hits theaters on July 27, and there's been no word on what movie he'll work on next. So assuming nothing else falls on his radar, perhaps he'll be willing to set aside time to make Green Lantern Corps a reality.
No Green Lantern Corps plot details have ben revealed yet, but the movie is reportedly taking a "Lethal Weapon in space" approach, with Hal Jordan being the older, experienced Green Lantern and John Stewart being the fresh recruit. Given how many times McQuarrie has collaborated with Tom Cruise, if McQuarrie ends up directing Green Lantern Corps, maybe he'll consider Cruise to play Hal Jordan. While none of Earth's human Green Lanterns have been introduced to the DCEU yet, last November, Justice League officially laid the groundwork for the emerald-tinted mythology when several alien Lanterns were seen aiding the humans, Amazons, Atlanteans and Greek gods in battling Steppenwolf's forces thousands of years ago.
Green Lantern Corps was last expected to be released in theaters in 2020, and DC has February 14, June 5 and July 24 of that year blocked off. However, with a number of other DCEU projects reportedly being fast-tracked, like Flashpoint and The Batman, it remains to be seen if Green Lantern Corps will actually arrive in 2020. If Warner Bros wants to hit that target, it will unquestionably need to sign Christopher McQuarrie on soon and get preproduction rolling in the next couple months.
