Move over Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland, because if this is true it's the most telling MCU slip up yet. In an interview from the Captain Marvel set visit, Samuel L. Jackson raved about the newest Marvel hero, but might have said a bit too much. Speaking about how powerful Brie Larson's iteration of Carol Danvers is, the actor stated:
She's pretty much the strongest character -- in terms of someone with powers are able to do things -- in the Marvel universe. So, for Carol Danvers to be that person and for Brie to become that person, it's gonna be a dynamite thing. I mean, [the Avengers] are up against some really, really tough odds right now -- we saw throughout Infinity War -- so now we know that we need something that's as powerful as Thanos. And at some point, we'll find out how powerful she is and all the things that she's capable of. She's one of the few people in the Marvel universe that can time travel, so...
Wait, WHAT? Back up, ok, yes, we read that right... Samuel L. Jackson actually just said that Captain Marvel can time travel while speaking with Entertainment Tonight. And if you're unfamiliar with the superhero, that's not under her typical skill set. This could confirm the ever-popular theory that time travel will come into play in Avengers: Endgame, which Captain Marvel will appear in after making her solo debut.
Carol Danvers is certainly one of the most powerful superheroes in the MCU already. The comic book character has mutated with Kree DNA, giving her the ability to produce energy blasts from her hands and generate and control any form of radiation or gravity, along with having super strength and being able to fly. If she can time travel too, this changes the whole game.
Avengers: Infinity War ended with some dire circumstances, namely half of the universe being wiped out by Thanos' snap after he successfully nabbed all of the Infinity Stones. Since key heroes such as Spider-Man and Black Panther were victims too, many believe the Avengers: Endgame will utilize some sort of time travel plotline to reverse these circumstances.
Of course, if Captain Marvel possesses this ability, Nick Fury called exactly the right hero at the end of Infinity War before he too was turned to dust. However, if Carol Danvers can time travel, why didn't Fury utilize Captain Marvel before in the MCU? Maybe it's some sort of last resort Fury and Danvers agreed on and Fury made the judgement that this time around was when he needed to phone it in (or rather, page it in).
It certainly would make a lot of sense as to why Captain Marvel is debuting right before Avengers: Endgame and why her story will be rooted in the past. But did that really just happen? Did Samuel L. Jackson slip up and ruin a potential plot line? We'll know for sure when Captain Marvel comes out on March 8.
