Don Cheadle Wants Deadpool To Join The Avengers

Avengers: Endgame has been in theaters for a week, but the conversation regarding the film's contents have only just begun. The Russo Brothers crafted an extremely ambitious blockbuster, which wrapped up the Infinity Saga and even provided a few teases for what's coming next. But with the absence of a credits scene, most of Phase Four is a giant mystery.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Marvel's future is if/when the characters previously owned by 20th Century Fox will be adopted into the massive shared universe. This is perhaps the most relevant to Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool franchise, as Disney has expressed its interest in continuing the R-rated romp. Don Cheadle has played War Machine in the MCU since Iron Man 2, and recently expressed hope that Wade Wilson joins The Avengers, saying:

Yeah, I think that Deadpool would, I think we want to see that.

You tell 'em, Rhodes. The Merc with a Mouth has been noticeably absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and both the fans and cast themselves would love to welcome Deadpool to the fold in a future installment.

Don Cheadle's comments to Variety echo what Marvel fans have been saying since Deadpool first hit theaters in 2016. Ryan Reynolds played the fourth-wall-breaking antihero masterfully, and the character became extremely popular to casual fans overnight. And considering how much the title character references the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the idea of him assembling with Earth's Mightiest Heroes hasn't been far from moviegoers' minds.

And according to Don Cheadle, that also includes the members of the MCU. While Disney's plans for Deadpool and The Avengers is unclear at the moment, it seems like a logical time to bring Wade Wilson into the fold. Endgame marked the end of the OG Marvel actors' contracts, so it's unclear if we'll see the likes of Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man again in the future. As such, Marvel Studios may want to bring new talent to help fill in the ranks.

Enter Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. Bringing Wade Wilson into the MCU would skip the pesky origin story or first introduction, with cinephiles instead following a fully formed character. The Deadpool franchise has made a ton of money at the box office, so even casual moviegoers will have some understanding of the foul mouthed anti-hero. And from all the references, it's clear that Deadpool knows the MCU's denizens well.

For now, we'll just have to wait and see if/when Deadpool joins the MCU. And he's not the only formerly owned Fox property, as the Fantastic Four and X-Men also have the potential to be adapted by Marvel Studios.

The Dark Phoenix Trailer Just Spoiled A Massive X-Men Death

Two very early promotional images from Simon Kinbergs upcoming Dark Phoenix included Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) crying in the rain, and the X-Men standing around a freshly-dug grave. Who was in the grave? Why was Jean devastated? Was it Jean in the grave, before she is reborn as the Phoenix? Or did Jean cause someone elses death? Well, the new trailer for Dark Phoenix, which arrived on Wednesday night, gives the answer away, and its a big old spoiler. Seriously, dont watch this trailer if you do not want to know what is spelled out for fans. We will discuss on the other side of the clip:

Why did you make me do that? Jean asks herself? Well, the Phoenix power that is awakened inside of her. Do what, though? Its very clear that Jean loses control and eliminates Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), after the shape-shifting mutant tries to calm down her friend and control the growing force that is rising up inside of her.

Youre my family, Jean, Mystique says. No matter what. Then she receives what certainly looks like the death blow.

Mystique is notably absent from the rest of the footage, though in all fairness, this very well could be a bait and switch by Foxs marketing department to make us believe that Jennifer Lawrences time in the blue makeup is drawing to a close. Lawrence has made no bones about talking in public about a desire to move on from the X-Men franchise. Shes largely tired with the makeup process that turns her into Mystique, and after holding down roles in both the Hunger Games series and the X-Men saga, she is ready to move on.

Dark Phoenix might be a moving on moment for the X-Men series, as a whole, anyway. The eventual merger between Disney and Fox will affect all aspects of both studios, and one assumed acquisition will be the X-Men franchise into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning that the MCU can reboot everything that has happened in the Bryan Singer/Simon Kinberg era of mutant stories, starting over from Square One.

Of course, Simon Kinberg has the final say on what clearly is the death of a major character in the X-Men franchise since Day One, when she was played by Rebecca Romijn before passing the baton to Jennifer Lawrence in X-Men: First Class. To eliminate any suspicion that this is a classic marketing fake out, Kinberg spoke with EW about the death, and explained:

The thought process behind that was to primarily show that this is a movie that is unlike other X-Men movies. Its a movie where shocking things happen, where intense, dramatic things happen. People dont just fall off buildings and dust themselves off and walk away. Theres a reality to this movie and a consequence to this movie. Even more than that, it was to show that Jean/Dark Phoenix is genuinely a threat to everyone, including the X-Men.

When asked to elaborate more on the decision to remove a ticket-selling A-lister from a franchise that could benefit from a boost at the box office, Kinberg admits:

I had a lot of emotions about it. I was obviously sad about it, as Jens a friend, and also as a fan of Jen as an actress. But I felt it was the strongest, most dramatic thing for the movie, and sometimes you have to make those kinds of hard decisions to service the larger story. And the larger story really is Jean cracking up, losing control because shes more powerful than anyone else in the world. To dramatize that properly, you have to show real loss, you have to show real pain and show real threat and menace. I didnt want to do that by her blowing up a building with anonymous people in it. It had to feel really personal for the X-Men, and I wanted it to be something that would fracture the X-Men as well. Mystique is someone who in our universe has been part of the X-Men and has been part of Magnetos world. Her death impacts literally everybody.

There is something satisfying about a franchise that is willing to tackle a massive death for the benefit of stakes. Those same stakes have been missing from the big properties at DC and Marvel, as Superman (Henry Cavill) was killed off in Batman v Superman, but levitating dirt told fans immediately that everything was going to be OK. And even though half of the known universe has been snapped away to dust in Avengers: Infinity War, no one believes that characters like Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Spider-Man (Tom Holland) or Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) are going to remain dead in the MCU.

However, theres always the lingering truth that because of the Disney-Fox merger, this could be the final chapter in this existing X-Men series, so bold sweeps wont have much affect beyond the action that takes place in Dark Phoenix. Were not even 100% certain that the New Mutants movie thats part of this shared universe will see the light of day, or if it does, doesnt end up on a streaming service instead of playing in a theater. Marvel Studios probably doesnt want too many dangling threads from this series. They want to start over, and create mutants in the MCU on their own terms.

For now, Dark Phoenix is the next (and possibly last) X-Men movie reaching theaters. It will retell a classic X-Men story from the comics, where Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is exposed to a mysterious force while on a mission in outer space, unlocking the Phoenix power that resides inside of her. The trailers suggest that Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) has been aware of Jeans potential since a young age, but failed to cure her of it. This story was told once before in the X-Men: The Last Stand film, but Simon Kinberg has admitted over the years that they didnt do the story justice, and he has been itching to tell it properly one more time.

Batman May Kill, But That Doesnt Mean It Should Be The Norm

While its arguably the most polarizing entry in the DC Extended Universe, three years after its release, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is still a popular topic of conversation in the comic book movie world, and its director, Zack Snyder, has helped with that. Just last month, Snyder screened Batman v Supermans Ultimate Edition alongside his directors cuts of Dawn of the Dead and Watchmen as the capper to a 3-day event, and during one of the Q&A sessions, Snyder hit back against those who criticized his choice to have Ben Afflecks Batman kill, saying that those who have a problem with that should wake the fuck up. And he is right, Batman has killed people various times over the decades, but that fact doesnt mean that it is or should be his normal course of action. Far from it, Gotham Citys Dark Knight is a more interesting character when he chooses not to kill, no matter what.

During Batmans earliest comic book appearances, when he was written like the pulp characters popular at the time rather than a standard superhero, Batman had no issue dispensing lethal measures against the criminals he fought, like when he snapped a mans neck while swinging on a rope. Starting in the 1940s, though, he adopted a no-kill policy, which was presumably done to make him more appropriate for younger readers. That no killing rule has stuck for the most part, though there are instances when Batman has taken a life, both in the main DC universe and in alternate continuity stories (not in The Dark Knight Returns, contrary to what some believe).

For the sake of this piece, lets only focus on Batmans movie appearances. Michael Keatons Batman had no issue with killing foes, as evidenced by when he blew up Ace Chemicals while people were still in it in Batman and when he attached a ticking bomb to a Red Triangle Gang member in Batman Returns. Val Kilmer and George Clooneys respective Batmans had a slightly softer method with dealing with Gotham Citys superstitious and cowardly lot, but it wasnt until Christopher Nolans Dark Knight trilogy rolled around that a cinematic Batman declared that he wouldnt kill. However, that stance is muddied when considering that he let Ras al Ghul fall to his death in Batman Begins and drove straight into a trash truck in The Dark Knight that almost certainly crushed the Joker henchman driving it. By the time we get to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ben Afflecks Bruce Wayne, who has become more weary and cynical, has no issue with killing criminals, whether its by breaking their necks in a brawl or gunning them down in the Batmobile.

So yes, when it comes to movies, Batman has left a fair amount of bodies in his wake, but thanks to the Dark Knight trilogy, as well as various comic books, TV shows and direct-to-video movies, Batman is usually depicted as unwilling to kill criminals, no matter how heinous their crimes are. Why is this? The explanation changes depending on whos writing the character, but my favorite explanation comes from the 2010 animated movie Batman: Under the Red Hood, adapted from the 2006 comic book story arc Under the Hood. When Jason Todd, whos holding The Joker at gunpoint, questions if Batmans moral code doesnt allow for him to kill his arch-nemesis or if it would be too hard for him to cross that line, Batman responds:

No! God Almighty, no! It'd be too damned easy. All I've ever wanted to do is kill him. A day doesn't go by when I don't think about subjecting him to every horrendous torture he's dealt out to others and then... end him But if I do that, if I allow myself to go down into that place, I'll never come back.

Jason Todd then points out that hes not asking Batman to kill someone like Penguin, Scarecrow or Two-Face, only The Joker, but Batman refuses. No matter how much he hates Joker, no matter how many people the cackling crook has murdered, Batman just cant cross that line. And frankly, Batman following that rule makes him a more compelling character because its an understandable flaw in his approach to fighting crime.

Despite having no superpowers, Batman is usually considered to be one of the most formidable heroes in the DC universe. Give him enough prep time, and he can win just about any battle, and hes fought his way out of so many fantastical conflicts that hes earned the nickname Bat-God among fans. But when you boil things down to basics, Batman is just a regular man waging a war against Gotham Citys criminal underworld, sometimes alone, sometimes with partners. With Gotham City so infested with evil, Bruce Waynes life would be a lot easier if he didnt bother throwing villains in Blackgate Prison or Arkham Asylum, and instead just eliminated them right off the bat (pun slightly intended), but he cant. Hes incapable of doing that, for better or worse, adding extra drama to an already incredibly dramatic character.

Having watched his parents being murdered down in Crime Alley, Batman cant bring himself to take the life of another. To do so would make him an executioner, and as much as he embraces darkness, Bruce wont delve that deep into the shadows. Hes incapable of doing so, even if he comes close to at times (like when he threatened to kill Joker in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker for turning Tim Drake into a mini-Clown Prince of Crime). Its the same reason why he wont use a gun; if he did that, he would become too much like the man who irreparably damaged his life and the evildoers hes dedicated his life to thwarting, and hes not willing to fall that far, even if it makes his job significantly harder. Zack Snyder tossed all that out for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and while that decision makes sense if youre looking at Batman fighting crime through a more practical lens, it conflicts with the spirit of the character that has developed over the years.

Im not saying that all superheroes shouldnt kill; The Punisher wouldnt be who he is if he didnt snuff out criminals, and its hard to believe that heroes like Captain America and Wonder Woman who have been in wars didnt take any lives. I even understand Superman having to kill in rare instances, such as when he snapped General Zods neck in Man of Steel, another controversial DCEU decision. For Batman, though, killing flies in the face of his moral code. Sure there might be instances where hes not able to save everyone, but to the best of his ability, he wont have anyone die at his hands. Besides, if Batman went on a killing spree around Gotham City, that would destroy the already fragile relationship he has with Commissioner James Gordon and the Gotham City Police Department, and that would definitely be problematic for his mission.

Certainly one of the reasons superheroes have endured for so long is because different writers and artist have been able to interpret these characters differently, and change and development is integral to longevity. That said, theres no denying that most characters have core traits and elements that need to be retained in traditional depictions, and while its up for debate whether Batman not killing is one of those things, the fact of the matter is that more often than not youll see him exercise restraint rather than execute his foes, even if the movies havent always followed this rule. Its not necessarily the most realistic and logical approach to fighting crime, but hey, theres a lot about Batman that doesnt translate for real life, and yet we nonetheless still enjoy him 80 years after his introduction.
